That was really lovely! He's always had the knack of delivering really good, sincere speaches at the end of tours, thanking the road crew and saying something really special at the end but this one tops them all.
I'm not crying...but I am on the verge of it!
You know, on the Come Rain Come Shine documentary Phil admits to feeling embarrassed when watching his performances with Genesis. I think he feels he hammed it up a bit too much. So this time out, he played it down a lot more, concentrating more on the singing and less on the larking about (personally, none of that ever bothered me and I've always rated him as a frontman). Given that there was a lot less anter between songs, when he comes out and says something like this, it seems more sincere.
Most of us will never know what it's like to be in a band that's been around as long as Genesis. As he says, it's a family thing and they all grew up together. Fans snipe and b*tch and moan about this and that - "oh, they didn't play this song", "oh, they've sold out", "meh, it's not like the old days", blather blather blather - they forget just how special a band like Genesis is and how wonderful it must be to be a part of all that.
As someone who's supported them for over twenty years now (not really a long time when compared with how long they've been around) and I've never had a bad word to say about them, I'm proud to feel a part of the Genesis community and the love and good feeling that comes from the power of this music. We truly will never see their like again and farewell speeches like this really do hit home.

Maybe even especially for a boke. I showed it to my wife last night and, apart from laughing at a few of Phil's remarks, she was oddly unmoved, even by the declaration of love for Tony and Mike!
I wish the clip went on to include Carpet Crawlers, though; to hear that straight after the speech would have really started the waterworks for me.
It would be nice if this farewell speech were to wind up on an official release at some point, just to give it some permanence.

I shouldn't have watched it... I have always thought that Genesis is the greatest band on Earth, not only because of their music - but also the history. This speech was so great and I'm now so moved I can't say a word... It's hard to think that this FANTASTIC BAND will soon be just history... If there is no another reunion - it is the sad truth. But I still have some spare hope for The Lamb Tour... Although I know it is very uncertain and probably won't succed Well - I'm in a very sentimental mood - forgive me guys...

Nothing wrong with being sentimental!
I agree, the story of Genesis and their longevity is sometimes as enticing as the music they've been making all these years. Everything has to reach its end at some point though; at one point it looked it would be Calling All Stations, a real bum note to go out on. Happily, we had the reunion and we live in hope for one more. Maybe there'll be another studio album, maybe there won't, but I don't think we should have any fear of Genesis turning into some sad, lumbering cabaret act playing to ever decreasing crowds. When the end is officially announced, it will be with their diginity intact.

For me, Calling All Stations is a very good album....much better than a few of the preceding albums. Opinions....of course, but a bum note? I disagree I hope you could at least agree that Ray Wilson is an excellent vocal talent?

You having a laugh? He's worse than useless, both as a singer and as a frontman. A worse mistake Genesis couldn't hope to commit in an otherwise illustrious career.
Hindsight is twenty-twenty, to coin a phrase, and both Mike and Tony have fessed up to this almighty c*ck up in Chapter And Verse.
I can only hope all those faces peppering your post are a sign of you being ironic, demolition man, otherwise...well, I despair for your taste, I truly do. I have a sinking feeling, though, that you're being serious.
