Daryl Steurmer Interview

Quote:
What are the most challenging Genesis pieces for you to play?

Nothing I play in Genesis is very technically hard to play, but I would say “Supper’s Ready” is challenging because it’s a big arrangement with lots of things to remember. When you’ve been out on tour for three months or so, your mind might wander for a second and suddenly you go “Uh oh, where am I on this song?” [laughs] That’s more of a challenge than anything I play on the guitar. I should also mention “Domino,” which is one of my favorite songs to play bass on. It has a challenging bassline that I had to get to grips with. But in general, the biggest challenges in Genesis music are more mental than they are physical.

+1

By all means of respect: Daryl is a nice guy but his solo in Moonlit Knight was a mess. wink Playing Steve's parts is not just a matter of technical challenge, it's as much a matter of expression and that's the point Daryl had a little problems with imho.

Yes,I've been listening to some of his very early attempts at Steve's solo's lately.

He does much better in the early days in my opinion....and then as the years pass by it seems to be something of personal a challenge to him to see how many extra notes and scales to Steve's luscious solos as he can!

For me the emotive feel and sustain are missing compared to Steve's live offerings..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLTlAnVUx3A

Didn't Tony downplay Steve's contributions to this song and solo by saying Steve was only playing what he,Tony had asked him to play??

He is a great player, but his solo is completely unrelated to Firth of Fifth; that way of playing would be great in other contexts, but here it sounds absolutely out of place. undecided

I am really pleased to find out that Daryl finds Genesis music not that difficult to play, perhaps he could give Nick Beggs the benefit of his wisdom because from looking at his Facebook page he has been trying to learn the set for the Hackett tour for two months now and is not finding it easy at all. Though i have no doubt who will do the better job when the time comes.
