I was listening to a documentary about jazz in which all the players had to play from a sheet of music. I was wondering if Chester could read music?

Yes Chester can certainly read music. It was one of the things he had to do when he was in the band with Zappa.

Drummers that are "proper educated"* can read music because they got it from their education and actually needed the skill to be educated (as most of the stuff taught was written on sheetmusic, you will learn grooves and rhythms much better if you can write them down and read them).

*I mean the guys that come from Juliard, Berkley etc.

Thanks for the reply. So I guess Chester is very versatile : capable to interact with someone who cannot read music (Phil) but also capable to read music. What an incredible musician.

Just in case you have any doubt left cheesy: on his homepage (www.chesterthompson.com, under "Lessons"), Chester provides some drumming exercises that he wrote (he teaches at Belmont University). Also, in the Chapter & Verse book, he recounts how during the rehearsals for the Wind & Wuthering tour, he wrote down all his parts during the night and read the sheet music during the rehearsals (they had only ten days to rehearse all the songs).

Cool story, hardly surprised…

As the other have said, yes, Chester can read.

He was also the drummer in the stage version of The Wiz at the time he got the call to join Genesis. There's simply no way to do that kind of gig without being a reader.

I would guess that session musicians are more likely to be able to read music than permanent members of bands.

Being able to read music is indeed often the thing that can make or break your studio session gig. Being able to read music also gives you a much better understanding of the concept "time" because you see the relation of everything to the subdivision (which is usually the quarter pulse).
This is especially true for drummers. If you want to go a bit more advanced (like polyrhythms ) then the ability to read music and actually "see" the polyrhythm is mandatory to be able to play it well.
That said, Chester is of course not unique in this skill. Lots of professional drummers can do it.

I didn't say that some permanent band members, Phil being one, couldn't read music. That said, we've had this discussion before and I think it was revealed that Phil can't read music, though I could be wrong. wink But plenty of musicians who are most well known for playing another instrument can't read music but can pick up playing the piano, e.g. Paul McCartney.
