I was hunting for Steve's net worth and came across these two fake articles which I believed at first somehow... Oh well...

http://en.mediamass.net/people/steve-hackett/highest-paid.html

http://en.mediamass.net/people/steve-hackett/sexiest-alive.html

There are also some other very funny articles...

An article from that site claims that Don Henley of the Eagles is so rich partly because he has a lucrative endorsement with Cover Girl Cosmetics.... grin

I clicked on that once & went to the Eagles message board & breathlessly asked 'is this true'? before quickly realising my mistake...

I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this so thought a "News" thread would do as I'd consider this "news" including the quotation marks.

I came face to face with SH in Marks & Spencer food store in Twickenham today. He was with his wife and they were contemplating the presentation boxes of chocolates. They selected one, added it to the litre of milk already in his basket, and headed off towards pickles and preserves.

I don't like approaching people when they're off-duty like that so didn't say anything to him, not even "mmm, nice-looking chocolates." I later saw him outside the store chatting to a second woman but still didn't approach despite the encouragement from Mrs Backdrifter.

I came across this article where he talks money: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/celebritymoney/article-4327656/I-100-week-Geneisis-says-STEVE-HACKETT.html

I suspect Steve would have been courteous but I would have done as you did, keep my distance and file it away as a personal anecdote.
Like you, me and most others, I imagine professional musicians appreciate moments where they can be out to dinner with family, or make a purchase or complete some mundane task without being reminded of what they do for a living.
