Sorry if this looks like a stupid question.

I'm not too familiar with all of Steve's discography but this far I noticed 3 songs that deal with the topic of the Hitler regime in Germany: A Tower Struck Down, The Golden Age of Steam, and Outwitting Hitler - that last one I don't know at all, maybe the lyrics don't have any real connection to the topic? Anyhow, being from Germany I just found it odd that an artist from another country who ranks very high in my musical preferences keeps making songs about a very touchy topic of my country's history. Does he have some personal connection to Germany or to that chapter in history, maybe some family members who lived through the Nazi regime or something?

I can't answer your actual question, but...

(1) A Tower Struck Down: I assume you're referring to what sounds like chants of "Hitler, Hitler" near the end. I've never been sure (or gotten any "official" confirmation) as to what the chanting voices are actually saying, though.

(2) Outwitting Hitler: There are actually 3 short pieces Steve did for the soundtrack of "Outwitting Hitler" (a documentary). One of the pieces does have that title, but all 3 are instrumentals. (All the music from these, BTW, showed up later in METAMORPHEUS.)

At the end of A Tower Struck Down. they are saying 'Sieg Heil', so yes that's a reference to Nazi Germany.

Steve's first wife - Ellen - was German (I think she passed away fairly recently), and they have a son Oliver, who may or may not live in Germany.

Alan H will know......

Oliver certainly did live in Germany until very recently, may still do so.

"Simple! I'll have the musical talent of Steve Hackett" I replied!

Thanks, I always wondered about that. Interesting that I should mishear it in a way that was still relevant.

I am German and I didn't understand it either, I only learned about it through the German Genesis forum where this was mentioned. It is pretty hard to make out what they are yelling at all. But yea, supposedly the "tower" that gets struck down is a metaphor for the Nazi regime that got torn down.
