xx Ray Interview
« Thread started on: May 9th, 2012, 05:30am »

Hi there

I am currently putting together questions for an interview with Ray which will cover his entire solo career from Cut onwards. This will be part of a future edition of TWR and it would be great if some of the members of this forum were willing to send in their questions for it. If you have any, feel free to PM me here and lets see what we can get out of Ray!

Hi Alan,
I would like to ask 'Young' Ray;

We know Phil was very keen on his train set and is now firmly ensconced with all things 'Alamo'......Does Ray have any hobbies/interests outside of the Rock/Music industry that might surprise his fans?

Regards

1) Would Ray ever be keen to work with other members of the Genesis family such as Steve Hackett or Ant Philips on a project?

2) I'm here in the States and love all his solo stuff. Any chance of him ever coming here to perform?

Another question just occurred to me,if thats ok?

We know Ray is an able guitar player, and indeed he plays very competently.
Could he have played any lead guitar whilst with Genesis if he had been asked to do so?

Could he play the solo in Firth of Fifth,Horizons,or maybe Abacab?
Or are there any other solos he feels he could have managed.
Regards
Pete

My questions to Ray:

1. Who inspired you to pick up a guitar and start writing songs?
2. What was the first Genesis song you ever heard?
3. If you could choose any career besides "musician", what would it be and why?

I would just like to ask Ray if (at the time) he had started to or had planned to write a follow up to Calling All Stations?

If he had started writing songs what happened to them?

Thanks.

There has been a lot of talk over the years about Ray's clear disappointment about how his Genesis project went.

With now quite a few year between the events and now I wonder what he feels about the whole experience.

Does he think, in retrospect, that they should have handled it differently ?

(btw .. my personal view is CAS is an OK album with a couple of really great songs on it and some not so hot .. I would have loved to have heard the next album which I guess would have been better.

I think if Genesis had played say local venues (like the Mechanics just did on their UK tour last summer) and not huge arena's and perhaps less WCD and more of the stuff which suited Ray's voice better (e.g. some of the older PG less 'commercial' Genesis stuff) then the reception would have been much better towards him and the band from it's core fan base. I also think that if they had kept Daryl and Chester then it would have been the old Genesis but with a new singer.

Can I ask why Chester and Daryl were not included in the project at any stage, did they have other commitments?

Daryl was touring Dance into the Light with Phil and Chester .. not sure .. but I seem to recall he turned the Phil tour down or decided not to do it because he did not want to be away from home at that the time .. but could be completely wrong..

There was also rumours that he had asked about joining Genesis when Phil left and Tony/Mike turned him down .. again not sure if that is the truth of speculation ..

Thanks for those possible reasons.

I would have liked to have heard Ray with the usual Daryl/Chester line-up.....
