The two lengthy, proggy, metal-y, and awesome opening songs of the Coverdale and Gillian eras.

Highway Star for me.
Never been that big on the Coverdale era, and if truth be told, I actually prefer Rod Evans to both of those singers.

Definitely Highway Star!
Just love it when they play this live and Roger Glover's bass kicks in, that wall of sound just hitting you, fabulous. smiley

"Highway Star" for me.

I had to go back and listen to these. I've only heard each one once.

Love 'em both, but chose Highway Star because its a classic. I'm into both eras of the band.

A couple years ago, Coverdale and Whitesnake came out with a Deep Purple trib album of the Coverdale-Hughes era songs called The Purple Album. Highly recommended.

I love Burn. Had it as a ringtone on an old Nokia in 2001 and was gobsmacked when my phone rang in a meeting and one of the 'suits' I was meeting with went "ooh Purple, nice!"

But nothing can compare to the opening track of Made in Japan.

They are both brilliant songs, but under the influence of my Glenn Hughes worshipping hubby, it's Burn for me.

Probably on vinyl, certainly not on CD. I will ask.

ETA: It turned out he thought he only had one Trapeze album & that was on cassette. He says he has a DVD of Hughes singing Trapeze songs though. He's a fan but he's not a completist. (He also reminded me that another ex Purple member Tommy Bolin's album Teaser featured Phil Collins).
