xx police / sting
« Thread started on: Apr 23rd, 2016, 2:53pm »

a few months ago i got all five police's albums and the first four sting solo albums (up to 1993's ten summoner's tales). when i was a teen i owned a couple of compilations in cassette, and i felt like listening to that music that brought me back good memories.

the police's music has a jazzy feel. they were very good at jamming together, specially in the live shows. they have a couple of instrumental tracks, also.

sting's solo albums include many songs written in odd time signatures -at least they sound like that in my ears-. for example, fortress around your heart, seven days and when we dance.

the reasons above make sting/police music vaguely similar to genesis. besides, they were produced by hugh padgham, too.

I don't see Police and Sting similar to Genesis or only from a very broad approach - same era of music, kind of artsy rock music which is not really rock music - but: I love Sting's music. smiley

Police never appealed to me as much as Sting's solo albums, though I'd always rate them as a very good band. Maybe not enough keyboards for my taste. And yes, you are right about the odd time signatures, Sting is partial to 7/8 and 9/8, he used both of them lots of times. 'Fortress around your heart' is in 4/4 though. wink The Police track 'Mother' is in 7/8 too.

I'm definitely more into Sting than The Police. "The Soul Cages" is one of the finest albums I have ever heard, with "When the Angels Fall" being truly outstanding, in my top 5 songs ever.

(The recent companion album "The Last Ship" was very good too though.)

I'm a big fan of The Police, especially after they shifted away from their attempts at punkish music (nothing against punk, I just don't think The Police did it well). The first 3 albums bear little resemblance to anything by Genesis, being much more musically minimalistic. The Police could set up fantastic grooves and soundscapes with relatively little (e.g., Voices Inside My Head). They got a bit more lush on the last two albums, but were pretty solidly in the pop/rock vein overall to my ears (even with the occasional odd time signature).

I think Sting was strongest on his first 4 solo albums and after that I lost some interest. The Soul Cages is my favourite too - achingly poignant.
