He was 90 years old. The end of an era. RIP George.

Truly an integral person in all that The Beatles created. From his arrangements to his production innovations, he was the only true "fifth Beatle."

I highly recommend his book All You Need Is Ears to learn more about his life and production work.

Indeed, a legend has passed. It's easy to forget that he'd have been massively instrumental in shaping and enabling the Beatles sound, and as such, shaped so many other bands by influence. RIP.

The Fifth Beatle indeed, and remember how much he contributed to the actual music too (the 'harpsichord' in In Your Life perhaps the best known example). May he rest in peace.

I heard an apt description this morning about George Martin-"The father of popular music".
RIP...

It's kinda funny, but I remember a discussion from a number of years ago...don't recall exactly where...in which people had been downplaying George Martin's contributions regarding his work with The Beatles. It was one of those instances where being negative came across as knowledge, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

I think it would be well within reason to declare that George Martin was not simply a great music producer, but one one the greatest influences on modern popular music. Not only did he recognized the talent that lay within that group of lads, but he encouraged their explorations and contributed to their music making. Who knows what would have happened if he and the Fab Four had never crossed paths. And beyond The Beatles, his studio track record is beyond impressive. Truly the end of an era. sad

Didn't he release a solo album only few years ago? I always wanted to check that out, perfect occasion to do this now.

He's done collections of his work as a producer, and orchestral things, but not a "solo album."

BTW, someone needs to get his Wikipedia page fixed. It's gone from saying he was 90 to saying he was 100, then 116.

*edit* - It has been fixed.
