Well, that was a bloody awful start to the year, and particularly sad timing given the upcoming RARHOF induction I had hoped he could attend.

The prostate cancer that he has been on medication for for many years has finally caught up with him, and the creator of many fine flute passages, where other bands might have gone for guitar solos (As well as Nights in White Satin, another obvious one is Dawning is the Day, another Justin song where, having written it, the guitarist might ordinarily have done his own solo, but instead let another band member have the glory - this is one of the things that made the band different) has gone.

Rest In Peace Ray, you really have gone too soon.

Among others, you'll be remembered for this:

I had the pleasure of seeing Ray twice with the Moody Blues. I even managed to get a decent photo of him playing flute. I remember now they played Timothy Leary's Dead at at least one of the shows I saw. I had been looking forward to the classic lineup (plus Denny Laine now huh) at the Hall of Fame induction. May he RIP. I will have For My Lady in my head all day now.

Very sad to hear this. I've been familiar with classic Moodies longer than almost any other band, and still listen to their 1967-1973 output frequently.

As great a songwriter as Justin Hayward is, I always felt the Moody Blues' unique sound centered on the combined contributions of Mike Pinder and Ray Thomas.

A sad loss considering the timing. It would have been nice to see them all together one last time.

I am absolutely gutted. Ray, for me was a huge influence on the first 8 albums. I had the pleasure of seeing him with the band singing For My Lady and Legend of a Mind. I was very sad when he left the band and would welcome hearing the music that he was working on before his passing.

Yes, I'm hoping that will eventually see the light of day, too!

I've realised why the news wasn't released until Sunday: The Moody Blues cruise was on until then. I guess the band and Ray's family thought it best to wait, rather than turn the cruise into a floating requiem.

Despite no longer being an active band member, Ray was still involved at a business level with the band, so it is entirely likely the family and band would have consulted each other.
