Killed in a "Segway mistake" (At least, we'll have to assume it was a mistake, pending police investigation.)

I saw the sad news on Twitter. I suppose after wringing maximum comic mileage from poor old Brian over 3 good series & the DVD, it makes sense to finish him off with a tribute programme. Looking forward to it, but let’s just hope life doesn’t imitate art!

RIP Brian - how you got consigned to BBC4 while BBC1 broadcasts unfunny dross like Mrs Brown’s Boys as prime-time comedy is a mystery sad

My daughter texted the news to my wife (she subscribes to NME) while I was driving, and my wife "broke the news" to me. She seemed a little bemused when I laughed! cheesy

Sorry, I like MBB, the outtakes that aren't taken out are the best bits.

Ta for the heads-up, I'll be recording. It had slipped past me somehow.

SPOILERS ALERT

As I've found with all the Pern stuff, it was pretty unsophisticated and not very funny but with a few nice touches here and there. For me probably the best thing was the range of people they managed to get involved, and bookending the show with Collins trying to promote his book. PG's demonic appearance was amusing.

Absolutely agree. The bold bits are a bit like Doctor Who in the mid to late '80s.

I've got no idea how such a laboured series as Pern ever got commissioned to be honest. It's like some amateur thing that's been made for Youtube by fans. It goes to prove what John Cleese said that "a large proportion of the commissioning editors have no idea what they're doing" at the BBC these days.

Yes.

I enjoyed it. The tribute episode was more laboured than the others, but that’s because they’d had all the comic mileage possible out of the idea & it was a good point to stop there rather than continue into flogging a dead horse territory.

The 2nd series was the peak & they couldn’t have gone upwards after that. Funniest thing on the BBC for years.

It was always the celebrity cameos & the little touches – from Dan Cruickshank moaning about Banksy to Noddy Holder’s wellington boots - that made it funny, & outweighed the laboured bits.

If you prefer comedies that are worthy but not very funny, watch “Detectorists” instead.

Really? I didn't think it was that good. I thought it was pretty weak stuff on the whole. That's a damning indictment of the modern BBC's comedy output.

Everyone has a different sense of humour, & since the BBC has a duty to cater for all of us TV licence fee payers, I’m entitled to get some amusement out of Brian Pern, W1A & Upstart Crow, as are others from Mrs Brown’s Car-share etc.
