question Worst Christmas song?
« Thread started on: Dec 3rd, 2017, 11:58am »

I started a Christmas job at a department store a few weeks ago (my second job this year) which of course means hours of Christmas music. I swear, it's turning me into Scrooge! Normally I love Christmas but this year I think I've had enough already and it's not for three weeks yet!

My least favourite Christmas song has to be "Walking in a Winter Wonderland". Cannot stand it. Especially since there's so many versions. As soon as I hear "sleigh bells ring..." it's immediately painful!

I have to agree with you, certain shops or retailers play the same thing over and over... undecided... It's the same with any music. A great song can be over played to a point of hating it.

At least it's only 3 weeks of torture. grin

That's my favorite! All season long I walk around and sing, at random times, "In the meadow we can make a snowman...." grin

Being Australian songs about Christmas in winter aren't my thing. Winter Wonderland has nothing to do with Christmas in my opinion. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it annoying.

I was an Eagles fan for decades & I have never liked Please Come Home For Christmas.

The Twelve Days Of Christmas is the worst ever, IMHO. It's like pulling teeth to get through the song.

Most of the songs mentioned I don't find especially annoying in themselves, but can become extremely annoying simply through the constant repetition they get at this time of year. I can imagine the department store job being really irksome in this regard. (On a complete tangent from this - I've often thought a similar thing about shops where every time the door is opened it triggers a two-tone electronic"bee-boop" alert. It bugs me being in there for a couple of minutes and hearing it a few times. I'd last less than a day working in one of those places!).

But yeah, The 12 Days is really annoying. But it's Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses that really hacks me off. I haven't heard it yet this year, but I know I doubtless will soon. It seems to go on for an eternity. I've actually walked out of stores where I haven't finished my shopping, just to get away from it.

I always found Jingle Bells quite annoying. Regarding overplaying, nothing beats "Last Christmas I gave you my heart". That has been played to death every single year since 1984 (Orwell's revenge? tongue ), some radio stations start rotating it as early as in late August!

When Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" comes on while I'm shopping, my first thought is to abandon my parcels or groceries and run to the nearest exit.
Absolutely grating.

Know what you mean, there’s always that extra irritation when someone who can do so much better doesn’t bother to try rolleyes

I find Wizzard one of the most irritating, partly because the idea of it being Xmas every day is horrifying for everyone except Roy Wood, who’d be a billionaire from all those extra royalties cheesy

It is too easy to pick worst Christmas songs or worst versions as there are so many. In general, I really don't like melodramatic soft pop takes on Christmas hymns. The hymns sound best as hymns - simple, not over-emoted.

I'm with you on Wizzard. Awful song, dreadful concept.

I like the waitresses though, one of the few good rap tracks. Also worth a listen, Thanks for Christmas by the 3 wise men, aka XTC. It's on youtube.

I think I'm finally done with Christmas music for life. Last night once again I had to listen to every awful Christmas song you can imagine while working. Four straight hours of it.

The irritatingly positive, sugar-coated Glee-esque voices of these singers combined with the excessively jazzy, brass-saturated instrumentaton of these songs makes me want to strangle a kitten. No matter what kind of over-the-top treatment you give them, "Jingle Bells", "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", "Walking in a Winter Wonderland", "Deck the Halls", "All I Want For Christmas is You" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" will never, ever be good songs.

It's happened. I'm Scrooge this year. sad I'll enjoy all the usual Christmas treats and trimmings but for the first time in my life I won't be at all disappointed when it's all over. I'll be looking forward to the icy depression of January. grin

Other than celebrating the birth of Christ, it's all pagan rituals anyhow. I enjoy every means of celebration this time of year, but I do understand how you've had it up to here with the Christmas music grin

Any song that involves Santa, reindeer, snow, snowmen, presents, Christmas trees, sleigh bells, other kinds of bells, etc... and has been recorded in a zillion different versions.
