It's a no contest for me. Both Sides might just be his best album.

I feel like I never 'got' Both Sides. There's some cracking songs on there and I get how personal it is, but I just find it quite dull on the whole. Saying that, the last complete album for me was But Seriously. But DITTL I find more enjoyable musically than Both Sides. Apparently I'm alone with this!

'dance into the light' is more upbeat, but i think 'both sides' is more sincere. anyway, i prefer one over the other depending on my mood.

Both Sides, although I'm not nearly as enamoured with it as Phil is himself.

I feel like I've written the following before, but my thoughts are this...

Both Sides has some great songs let down by the synth-heavy instrumentation; Dance Into The Light has a great band and nice production let down by some under-developed songwriting.

I was about to type that if you could combine the two you've have a truly great album, but the more I think about it I think it would end up being ...But Seriously.

Back to the original question I much prefer Both Sides. Songwriting trumps just being "upbeat."

I can't choose between the two. In my opinion, both albums had some great songs on it, but also had a fair amount of filler and a lack of tempo change between songs. For me, neither of these albums compared to the albums that came before them (especially the first two).

i sometimes think that both sides and dance into the light are "dumb brothers" of but seriously.

both sides takes the introspective quality of but seriously into a depressive level. and dance into the light turns the positive energy of but seriously into an unsubstantial joy.

But Seriously is the album where he lost me (I just thought it was boring). If I had bought Both Sides when it came out I probably wouldn't have waited so long to get back into him. I remember my brother saying it was good and he played all the instruments and I just thought "meh."

I think Both Sides is his best. I could see Please Come Out Tonight fitting very well on Duke.

Dance Into The Light is fun and light (imagine that). The world music style on this album bothers me a little more than the instrumentation on Both Sides, though. I do like some songs though.
