xx Pre Face Value / non-solo Phil songs
« Thread started on: Mar 29th, 2017, 08:34am »

Hi (new here - hello!)

I'm putting together a little comp of all the songs which Phil sings on which are not either official solo stuff or were from before he became lead singer with Genesis.

So far I have:

Ant Phillips - God If I saw Her Now, Which Way the Wind Blows, Silver Song, Only Your Love

Genesis - For Absent Friends, More Fool Me

Steve Hackett - Star of Sirius

What have I missed, if anything?? There were one or two Brand X tunes he sang on as well wasn't there?

I'm also trying to work out the chronological order they were recorded in - how does this look?

For Absent Friends ('71)
More Fool Me ('73)
The Ant Phillips tracks (recorded in '73(huh), some of them released in '77 on Geese/Ghost)
Star of Sirius ('75?)

Does his 2-line part on "The Colony of Slippermen" count?

Probably not. But then he didn't sing all of "God If I Saw Her Now" either.

There's a few tracks on The Lamb in which Phil's backing vocals are almost as high in the mix as Peter's. Almost like they had a double lead-singer at times.

He had some vocal lines and one complete song on the Flaming Youth album. Those were his first ever lead vocals on any officially released recording.

"Supernatural Anaesthetist" would be the prime example; that one does have a double lead. I'm not aware of other songs that would qualify though.

Phil sings on the song "Deep Green" on Jack Lancaster's album Skinningrove Bay (1980). I was able to buy a CD of this album on a record fair quite a few years ago.

So that is where this track is from. Is that album recommendable?

Thanks. Never heard this before - not sure I'm glad I did!
Is one of the lines really "There's been some famous whales, Moby Dick is one that springs to mind"
That's one of the worst lyrics I've ever heard!

He also kind of sings on "And So To F..." grin

Yes, I find it quite enjoyable. To me it resembles Brand X with a touch of folk music. It's a soft and beautiful album, but not a masterpiece by any means.

Yes, those two lines are pretty awkward. They make "sheets of double glazing" seem more reasonable.

There is that Freehold song as well, "Lying Crying Dying" from 1968.

Wow! Is that really him? He sounds a bit like Steve Winwood.

Yes smiley He talks about it in his book, it's the first song he ever wrote.
