Yes's "Tormato" album...
« Thread started on: May 5th, 2013, 12:55pm » |

As I mentioned in the "Recent Purchases" thread, I think this is a great album (my third favourite of theirs), even though it's highly disliked by Yes fans. But unlike other albums by prog bands that are disliked, I haven't yet noticed any glaring problems that fans of the genre would have with this album. It's not blatantly poppy, it doesn't seem messy or overdone, and even though its tracks are shorter than those on previous Yes albums, it's definitely very progressive with fantasy themes and Jon Anderson's traditional symphonic vocal style throughout it.
I've listened to the album about six times now and I was highly satisfied with it each time. So I'm generally fascinated to know what people think of this album and if it deserves its low Prog Archives rating (any album that gets a score lower than 3 is considered to be a bad album on the site). Because although it doesn't bother me that a lot of fans (and the band that made it) dislike it, I'm curious as to know why that is, because like I said, I haven't really spotted anything inherently wrong with it so far.
Leave your thoughts below.

I only have it on vinyl and haven't listened to it for years, bar one listen via Spotify recently. I'm sorry to say that it hasn't improved with age for me. Considering it was released only a year after the magnificent Going For The One and with the same band line up, I regard it as a massive disappointment. I think that Rick Wakeman calls it "Tomato"!

As you say, Tormato and also Drama are despised by many Yes fans. I must confess, that I like both albums. Speaking of Tormato you can see an attempt to go to shorter and more compact songs, away from the epic 20 minute prog dinosaur track. That just fits into the historical context, in which the album was released. And the band did quite a fine job. Most songs are great and really playful, although Rick Wakeman`s synth sounds a bit creaky at times. I think, that the album was a step forward for the band. It is not my favourite Yes album, but it is really consistent and credible.

I've often felt Tormato's reputation suffers from a comparison with the great albums that preceded it. It pales in comparison and is not as strong, IMO, but I don't think it's as dire as some make it out to be.
Tormato fares much more favourably when you compare it to all the Yes albums that followed, IMO, though I do prefer Drama.

Make the following substitutions:
1. Replace "Yes" with "Genesis". 2. Replace Tormato with And Then There Were Three. 3. Replace Drama with Duke.
And you get something that many Genesis fans on here think, though not me.

Nor I, since I think ATTW3 is a great album and I prefer it every album that followed including Duke.

Same, though Duke comes pretty damn close.

Apart from the relative release dates, I don't quite see where anyone could make such substitutions or have any reason to do so. And I doubt that many Genesis fans may have thought in this way.

I probably became a Yes fan during the period just before the release of this album. There was a lot of anticipation going on after the success of GFTO. The general feeling seemed to be that the material on Tormato just wasn't very strong. Not that it's a bad album, but certainly at that time there were greater expectations.
I liked the album at the time. Went to see them live for the first time on this tour. But it doesn't seem to have maintained its interest for me after all these years. Despite a couple of favorites ("Silent Wings Of Freedom", "Onward") there's some pretty cheesy stuff here ("U.F.O.", "Don't Kill The Whale", "Circus"). Not a Yes album I tend to gravitate towards.
