xx Express quote from a year ago
« Thread started on: Jan 14th, 2018, 04:43am »

Not exactly news, but seeing as it's a bit quiet around here at present, I thought I'd share that I was researching Talking Heads and came across an article from The Daily Express from 06/01/17. Oddly in the middle of an article about the likelihood of David Byrne reuniting Talking Heads comes this:

"Another rock band reunion which is more likely is Genesis, after Phil Collins revealed he was keen for it to happen.

The singer said: “I wouldn't want to do anything that lasted six months or a long time. But I wouldn’t rule out doing something.”"

The source of that quote by Phil appears to be from Oct. 2016, but there's really nothing new here.

Phil has been saying that he'd be open to a reunion for a number of years, but it's not up to him. And if I recall correctly, it would likely be only for the group of five, and there's only one person who is preventing that.

I don't know if he's thinking differently these days about just getting together again with Mike and Tony. He hasn't been specific about that, but considering his ongoing health issues it's all up in the air, as usual.

I'm assuming it might be Tony Banks holding things up.. Love his work, etc!! but he comes across rather strange IMHO... Most of the Genesis members have included an interest if possible, but not sure about Tony!! undecided

The newspapers have never been the best place to get accurate gossip about this band, even more so in a world of news agency generated non-story clickbait. 'I wouldn't rule out doing something' is not the same as 'keen to do something'.

Misinformation spawns more misinformation, so:

Tony (not at all strange imo) is the least likely of all the members to put the blockers on any kind of reunion, his willingness to do 'Genesis' has been consistent and on the record.

The block is, and always was the willingness (and now health), of the ex-singer(s). (One of whom can no longer drum, or stand without the aid of a stick). They're almost 70, not many people want to work at that age, so we're quite lucky that they're all around and still plugging away at their trade.
---

Anyone with access to BBC4 might wish to tune in on the next 3 Friday nights at 9pm for Hits, Hype and Hustle.

Yes it's hard to analyse and come up with anything meaningful... All we really know is that the 3-man lineup have a lot of affection for each other and always have a good time when they work together, and in theory, all three have said in their own way that they would like to do more.

So what's the problem(s)?

It's hard to imagine how Genesis live could work without Phil on drums... so maybe we need to see how his recovery progresses. But what about the three of them getting together and jamming and seeing if any new ideas come up for a potential 16th studio album?

My feeling, (and it is just my feeling) is that they seem reluctant... Tony and (particularly) Mike seem particularly bruised by the response to Calling All Stations. Phil has regularly stated that he has new solo material written, but he's reluctant to do anything with it in terms of releasing it. I wonder if there's a big fear that anything new might not live up to the wonder of the past, and they wish to preserve their legacy. They also might struggle to see where a new phase of Genesis fits in today's musical landscape. There's perhaps seemingly more of an appetite for the darker more complex material they do so well.

Either way, why not book up a couple of jamming sessions and just see if the magic's there or not?! If for no other reason than it might be highly enjoyable for them to try it... smiley

I honestly can't see nor particularly get excited about the idea of a Genesis reunion. Phil has being doing relatively well with his solo shows but don't think he's anywhere near strong enough vocally to carry off Genesis songs anymore. Nor do I think he'll ever recover enough to attempt playing drums again. His current health seems to be about as "well" as he's going to get. Sad to say but I think this idea needs putting to bed.

I dunno, Phil could do backing/duet vocals and various percussion instruments, Peter singing and Chester on drums (or someone else, Nick D'Virgilio, maybe). Don't know if Phil would want to do that though, but he would be more likely than Peter. Unfortunately this idea hasn't occurred to him, he seems to think that he has to play the drum kit (which of course would be the best thing!) or it cannot happen.

Whether he was the frontman or the drummer, fans tend to remember Phil as a multi-tasker and a ball of energy.
Even when Peter fronted the band prancing around in costumes, Phil was, in my view, at least the 2nd-most interesting person on stage to watch.

So to reduce him to a peripheral role at a Genesis reunion show would, for many people, only highlight his decline in health and abilities.

I can totally understand why Phil would never buy into this.

Perhaps he has and he just rejected it. If that's the case, I am happy he did, Personally and I am aware many don't agree, I would find it sad to see him relegated to that.

I agree. And I doubt very much that the band would want to reunite in such a way anyway.

I'm sure we all completely understand the yearning for some kind of live reunion, I'd love one. But that yearning just results in our scrabbling and scratching around for any conceivable way to scrape together a live show involving PC in some sort of reduced role. Regardless of how many fans would be prepared to accept that, I don't think PC or the other band members would want it.

I do and we are talking about my favorite band, so I wish it was never ending, however, it seems to me sometimes said yearning makes some fans oblivious to obvious things, like....time passing by or do we to wait until the fat lady sings?

Doesn't Phil have a rather reduced role on the Not Dead Yet tour?

I guess we can safely say a reunion might happen any time because they never rule it out and it's not out of the question. Never say never! tongue Except they have to wait until Phil can sing everything and he accepts he is not the drummer any longer.
