question For how long could you listen to live Genesis?
« Thread started on: Oct 19th, 2017, 1:19pm »

Bit of an odd thread but something I was thinking about today. On Monday evening I attended the Genesis tribute The Musical Box. As much as I greatly enjoyed and adored how they captured the Gabriel-era shows, there were some classic songs I expected them to play which weren't played (see my recent post in the "next gigs" thread in the live performances section of the forum). I would have happily enjoyed another hour or so of material since there are just so many songs to cover and the lengthiness of Genesis songs means the time allowed quickly runs out.

It made me think... if they were a Genesis tribute band with enough energy and time to perform music for as long as you want them to, for how many hours would you want them to perform for?

Personally I'd listen for just under 5 hours split into three blocks with two 30-minute intermissions between them. So that would be three 95-100 minute blocks for a total length of 5 hours 50 minutes minimum (including the intermissions) and a 6 hour maximum time. That to me would be the perfect length with enough space for plenty of great songs.

And sure, you could just say "I'd listen to them all day" and that's fine. But to me unless I took a lot of breaks, a gig lasting a whole day would be rather exhausting after too many hours.

Genesis concerts came close to two and a half hours in their heyday, and it never seemed to be enough. I've been to Springsteen shows that easily crossed the three hour mark, and it always felt like I could handle a few more songs. But looking at it realistically, there's going to be a certain threshold point where you have to say, "O.K., that's enough."

I think that I'd be more than happy with a four hour Genesis concert. Then again, if I actually got to see a 90 minute show today, I wouldn't complain.

In theory I wouldn't mind a performance of all Genesis material ever but reality would force me to set some limit. These days I'm not attending concerts every weekend any more; I was at a live gig last Tuesday (Triggerfinger with support of The Weyers) and 2 hours were enough - I had to get up early for work the next day and my ears kept humming for 2 days from the loud volume. When I was younger a concert never exhausted me like this, as a teenager you can deal with going out dancing, drinking, exposing your ears to loud music for hours and no sleep without any problem but the more you age the less you can take it seems.

Break that Genesis performance up into 12 gigs for each month in a year and I'll be fine. grin

If it is the Genesis, I guess I couldn't put a time limit on it (but of course you must consider the performers!)

If it's a tribute band, 2 and a half hours ought to do it!
