xx THE BEST OF GENESIS
« Thread started on: Jul 21st, 2017, 8:25pm »

Im not selling nothing here, just trying to share some pleasure.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5sfxjTPUyc7ZFFraU1JWDR6aDg?usp=sharing

I have produced a compilation of the best parts of the works of Genesis. There are 50 tracks. Chronologically in order (history). All ripped from the original CD versions (no remixed versions). The only setting (mix) I altered was the volume. The tracks are in .wav format and the whole folder can be burned to a 700mb cd if desired. The total length is 80 mins I think. If you REALLY want to enjoy this, I highly recommend it to be played with WinAmp music player (free) which includes the milkdrop 2 visualization add on.

1. download the file from my google drive link
2. unzip the downloaded file into a newly created folder on your hard drive (call it " THE BEST OF GENESIS")
3. download the latest Winamp player
4. dont try to create a playlist or import files into winamp, just go to the upper left "file" (menu bar) & then select " play folder". That way it plays the tracks in the correct order. Winamp has a glitch if you try to add folders to a playlist or such, it mixes up the order.
Make sure to turn the Visualizations ON (dont try to configure it, just let the program work by its own) & go FULL SCREEN. Adjust volume (HIGH). Enjoy for the next 80 minutes.

How do you get 50 "best" Genesis songs into 80 minutes? 10 of their best would run to more than that! Or do you mean clips of the songs?

I listened to it, despite your advice I used RealPlayer, I might burn it on a CD too. Soooo.... what you created is an interesting approach. wink I appreciate the time and efforts you put into this and it was enjoyable to listen to; however, I still prefer if the songs are left in full length or at least not sliced in such short pieces. A few times I was irritated when a climax was cut off and led into a segment from an entirely different song, I guess that's just from being so familiar with the songs. Also, I would call your selection of the "best" song parts interesting choices but I still don't agree to all. wink Nice effort by any means, just not for everyone I guess.

Likewise no offence, but I tend not to like chronological compilations. Lots of commercial compilations take this approach as well. Many people doing their own personal compilations do them like this as you have, so I get that lots of people like this approach, but it's not for me. I like a real mix-up of eras, similar to a gig setlist.

I'm planning a new compilation across 6 discs. I have had one on 4 discs for about 15 years but decided there were loads of other tracks I wanted to include (as well as some I've decided to retire).

No offense taken (by any). I knew when I offered it, it would be disagreeable for many. Of course its only my opinion what is "BEST". For me ( & possibly only me) its a wild ride of their history. It was very difficult trimming it down to 80 mins, but I wanted something I could burn to a common CD that will play just about on anything, so edit I did. Thanks to all who took the time to listen, even if you dont care for it.

As mentioned above, I'm re-doing my Genesis compilation. I last did it in 2000-ish, across 4 discs (I still like the 80-minute disc format, so there's a limit and some structure). This time, I'm expanding it to 6 discs. I dislike chronological compilations, and prefer to mix it up. Last time I included some live versions but decided this time it'll be all studio ones, maybe with a separate live compilation later.

So far I've done disc 1, as follows. In case anyone's remotely interested. I am intrigued by other people's compilations!

Do The Neurotic
Silver Rainbow
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
You Might Recall
It's Gonna Get Better
Alien Afternoon (intro)/The Dividing Line
Keep It Dark
Firth Of Fifth
Follow You Follow Me
No Son Of Mine
No Reply At All
Entangled
Pigeons

The balance of 5-man/4-man/trio/CAS is different on each disc, one or two will be much heavier on 5-man, etc.

Don't get too excited! It's pretty unsophisticated. At about 0.53, just before the main bit starts in AA, I cut it there, and lopped off that tiny little bit at the start of TDL, and joined them so the AA intro then goes straight into the bass-synth riff of TDL.

I don't mind the closing section of AA but the main part of the song is lame and the intro is probably the single-most interesting segment of the whole album, for me.

Meanwhile disc 2 is now done.

The Fountain Of Salmacis
Misunderstanding
On The Shoreline
In Too Deep
Naminanu
Dodo/Lurker
Sumbarine
Can Utility And The Coastliners
Uncertain Weather
Looking For Someone
Undertow
That's All
It
Watcher Of The Skies

Disc 4:

Man Of Our Times
Throwing It All Away
There Must Be Some Other Way
Horizons
Mama
After The Ordeal
Supper's Ready
Blood On The Rooftops
Congo
Ripples
In The Cage

Not having listened to it for some years, I found myself thinking what a brilliant pop song is Throwing It All Away.

I used to do chronological compilations all the time and after listening to them a few times around, it lost it's novelty. Now that the band is not producing any new music, it seems that "mixing it up" would make things fresh again. And even if you get tired of the order, all you have to do is hit shuffle! By getting away from chronological order, you are introducing cross-eras of music, so when you do end up hitting shuffle, it becomes a "Gump-like mix" because you never know what you're going to get! wink
