question Another album that sounds like...
« Thread started on: Jun 28th, 2017, 3:57pm »

Although Genesis has certainly left us a very large amount of material to enjoy for years to come, I've often found myself wishing that the band could have made another album that sounds similar to an album by them that I enjoy.

For me, that album is Trespass. It's a shame that they made just one album that focused on calming and spiritual medieval folk songs. Nursery Cryme may be a brilliant and heavy album, and its opening track is my favourite ever Genesis track, but I think that before making it they should have made another Trespass-like album first.

In this poll, you can choose what type of additional album you would have liked them to have made based upon another album or albums that you like.

Not sure I agree with you NSOV. I like albums or bands to sounds unique. Not too keen on bands that sounds similar or release albums similar to their previous work.

That's why early Genesis, Camel, Pendragon, Twelfth Night and IQ have that distinct sound in every album. Nothing the same. However, despite me being a huge Tangerine Dream fan they did come out with a lot of similar albums.

However, I grew up and love SEBTP a lot, so slightly biased on this album. Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering are both unique albums on their own and was probably their best work. Lots of mature sounds that grew with age. Phil was at his best then.

I went with ATOTT & W&W. I like the storytelling on those albums.

I agree with Noni on this one. One of the things I like so much about Genesis is there is always progress from one album to the next.

You can tell each time they got together to make the next album they had really thought about what they liked and what they didn't like about the previous album and tried to adjust the new material accordingly. Even back to back albums that happened in a fairly short span of time still ended up sounding unique.

That said, in the spirit of actually following the question at hand, I chose The Lamb. Not that I'm exactly wanting another album that sounds like The Lamb, as much as I'd like to hear them take another crack at a concept album, learning from and refining their methods from The Lamb to make something as boldly creative and musically adventurous.

I can't say that there's one I could vote for. I like that Genesis didn't have albums that felt like a "part two" to a previous album (I could see an argument for Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot though).

Another album in the vein of the insanely underrated Trespass would have been interesting. Though Genesis continued to improve throughout most of the 70s, there's a unique magic to Trespass that I'd like to have seen developed further. I also love Ant's contribution in terms of songwriting and arrangement, and sometimes wonder if things would have turned out better in the long run had he been able to stay.

Another release that sounded like any of the pre-trio albums (except FGTR) would have been fantastic.

My vote is for my favorite phase of Genesis: the four-man era.

A second album with Ray, with more writing contribution from him, would have been interesting to me as well, though.

I agree that a follow up to Calling All Stations would have been great assuming that they would have come in with Ray and a drummer from day one.

I voted Trick/Wind because both those albums were great. Too bad we didn't have more from the 4 piece era... sad

For me it was actually a tough choice between Trespass and CAS, but although another Ray Wilson would have been nice to hear, I don't really think there's that much else that the band could have done with his voice and the specific darker style they adopted to suit it.

I voted for Trick/Wind because I would have loved some more 4 man albums! Looks like a few agree!

I've gone for ATTWT/Duke. Although as soon as I voted I thought that they're already probably the most like a part 1/part 2 sequence of albums, along with Mama/Invisible Touch.

ATTWT was the first album that got me properly into Genesis and is still my favourite overall (SEBTP being a close second), so it's my version of 'definitive' Genesis, if that makes sense? Duke came closest to replicating that sound, albeit in a far more in your face bombastic way.

I voted CAS. Really because I feel that album is underrated, and I think Ray (and the rest) should really have been given a shot at another album before calling it a day.

My 2nd vote would've been Lamb. Really not so much the actual "sound" of it, but rather I would've loved if they tried making another 2 disc concept album, later on.

I wouldn't say that: the 4-man era always gathered praises and consensus and has never been as polarizing as the Gabriel era or the late 3-Man era.
Personally I regret it was short lived, I am definetely a big fan and Trick is my favorite album ever; that said, I think it was in danger of descending towards general blandness and becoming formulaic, so, perhaps it is a good thing it didn't last long.
