I'm surprised no one has mentioned this on here, unless I can't see it.

Uncut have recently published a summary of Genesis career including some attention to the various solo careers. This includes reprints of old MM and NME features and new appraisals of each album.

It appears to be well written (I'm up to Nursery Cryme) and for anyone who hasn't collected the old music paper articles it'll save you ££££ in tracking down the original articles.

£7.99 from decent UK newsagents and large supermarkets.

I saw this online. Are there many 'new' photos we haven't seen before?

I can't speak as an all eras fan, so take this how you read it. The pictures used in the Gabriel era (and of him solo) are certainly, in the main, unusual ones rarely used other than in perhaps similar magazines. This together with the rare record labels illustrated (singles in the main) makes it "well illustrated" by my reckoning but some people will see nothing or little they haven't seen somewhere before. I think the main draw is in the articles themselves and the new reviews of the albums, but given it is "well illustrated" makes it a very good buy regardless of how much of this one has seen before. For instance I have most of the articles from 1971-75 but its good to have them reprinted (although rules out any of the missing articles ever seeing the light of day again I would think). Make sure you keep your articles from Sounds though as these lie out of Uncut's grasp.

A word of warning though - MM and NME gave up on Genesis when they went through their Arena/Stadium period so there's little archive for them to plough from Duke onwards. They fill in those gaps with a couple of solo articles (of PG and PC) and a couple of retrospective articles (with new interviews) that originally appeared in 2007 and 2014.

So far as I can tell they've included nothing from the Gabriel interviews from 1982-88 when if they did feature him at all they tended to dismiss him as some kind of Third World Plunderer causing him to withdraw his support of both NME and MM, until NME healed the rift in 1989 (But even then they've not included anything from 1989-2006 either).

A second word of warning - release dates for the albums have been lazily drawn from Wikipedia, which are known, rather than believed to be inaccurate in many cases. So these need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

But those comments aside its a decent magazine which so far is proving to be an interesting read.

Thanks for the detailed overview! Always good to see old articles reprinted, especially from the 70s (my area of interest). I'm ordering online, bit steep with postage to Canada,, but it sounds like it'll be worth it.

Thanks for the tip-off, got it yesterday and am some way into it. Overpriced, but I couldn't not get it.

I liked the list of the editorial team, with their favourite Genesis or solo songs next to their names.

The reviews are good but it jars with me that parts of the original reviews are included including such sneering comments that WCD was only made because it was the band's 'job'. Well, yes. W&W is 'derivative' & the self-titled album 'obnoxious trifling'. These comments made me remember why during this period I refused to read British rock magazines as they seemed to hate all the music I liked. The magazine is also extremely harsh on Tony's solo output.

I didnít think the stuff on TBís solo work was overly harsh. Yes the contemporary music press really went off Genesis from the late 70s onwards, though I wouldnít entirely disagree with some of whatís said about W&W (but then itís never been a favourite of mine) and I think the guy who laid into Shapes, as I recall, had a particular problem with Illegal Alien Ė as do I Ė which led to a lot of his vitriol in that review.

Nice read as it is, what bugs me about this mag is that yet again, Hackett is sidelined. Thereís a lot of stuff about PGís departure and subsequent solo work, understandably of course, but nothing at all about SH going aside from references to it in the ATTWT section and mention of his dissatisfaction regarding writing credits etc in another piece. His solo stuff is crushed into the section that addresses Phillips, Banks and Rutherford. I realise this isnít a book, itís a magazine format and they have limited capacity but they could have had more SH-related stuff and it just serves to underline that so many narratives on their history marginalise him for some reason.

Not sure whether anyone can help with this but at the back of the mag thereís one page dedicated to collecting Genesis. And in this collecting Genesis article thereís a comment that I hadnít heard before which is, and I quote:
ďthe German promo pack of Illegal Alien (£30) or the Peruvian DJ mispress of the same (also £30).Ē

What Peruvian mispress of Illegal Alien? I know the title is spelt wrong, itís spelt Illegal Allien, but that surely canít be what theyíre on about, anyway itís spelt wrong on both the promo and the stock and this just talks about the promo.
So any ideas what theyíre referring to, is there really a mispress out there?

The other thing in the quote of course is the mention of the German promo pack and yet this is a bootleg.
Cheers

I looked it up and it is literally that the label says Illega! Allien, so a misprint not a mispress as such (the '!' is part of the misprint, not my mistake!) (though that last '!' is my own!) (and that one! - etc etc until the end of time).

Sorry to be pedantic, but where did you look it up?
Cheers and many thanks.

I know, but I think we can get too hung up on star ratings. Ultimately it's just some person's view of that track. Epping Forest got 4 stars, more than Firth. That doesn't make sense to me either, but hey, there will be people out there - and in here - who agree with those ratings.

I like that they didn't give star ratings to the albums so was a bit baffled that they then chose to give them to the individual songs.

As I said earlier, they have limited space to fill but all the same, there could have been some room given to an analysis of their non-album material.

I'll tell you what I would love to see: a Revolution In The Head style Genesis book, track by track.

i read it almost it all. i think it's pretty much focused on peter, which is not necessarily a good or bad thing...

the best part is the interviews to genesis members, firstly because i don't care much about what so-called music critics say, and secondly because all the articles are written in a pedantic language that i find exhausting to read -considering that i'm not a native english speaker-. genesis guys express themselves without those flourishes.

it bothers me how they despise tony's solo work. it's a pitty that he didn't have the success he deserved, don't sink him down even more! angry
