Hi there

Just managed to finally watch the DVD version of the documentary. To say I am disappointed by this is an understatement. If it were an album it would be receiving the infamous "frisbee" treatment round about now! Seriously a badly botched job which does no one any favours I'm afraid.

Ok my two cents or whatever currency you care to choose.

1: This is clearly aimed at the fans who bought Genesis albums and CD's when they were massive in the 1980's- 90's. It ties in with R-Kive so it is all about Genesis management getting a product out there. Think on that the originmal documentary was supposed to be just about The Lamb for it's 40 year anniversary until Genesis management got involved

2: It is also quite clear that the band had little or no input INTO THE FINAL EDIT... Phil hadn't even seen it until the night of the premiere FFS...... rolleyes

3: The chap who researched this was a Genesis fan who saw them on The Lamb tour I am led to understand. Other people were involved who I know to be fans of the band. Their input seems to be been ingored which must be very frustrating.

All in all I am happy owning both this and R-Kive as I am a Genesis fan. Are they both perfect? Of course not. But I am a fan so I will buy them...Fool that I am. cool

As Alan implies for us older and more loyal fans here is will be forever seen as an opportunity missed. Having said that the Roundhouse footage is great.....

Best wishes

John

Hi there

According to what I have been told, the band had seen several pre-edits (if that's the right word?) of this and so they must have expressed their satisfaction with it. BY the "band" I mean Mike and Tony, I doubt if the others saw it until a few days before the premiere when it was a fait accompli.

Mike sheds some light on this matter in a new interview: "Well, it could always be done better, of course. You know that Steve was complaining and I agree to that. It was done by Eagle Rock and I saw the first cut which was awful and it was so boring. There was no solo stuff from nearly anybody, none from Peter and Steve was hardly in it at all. So we had a conversation and they changed the editor and the team. New guys came in and we saw a new draft way past the deadline for the BBC and actually commented on things like there were no Vari*Lites, there was no Steve on the solo stuff and so on. And then we didnít see that one again before it was finished. We were not really in control, we got in too late really."

Yes what I find appalling about this statement is that:
1 nobody in the documentary team listened to what the band had to say input-wise
Or
2 the band just really didn't care enough to do anything about changing it..

Quite a contrast to the heavy marketing of that product. Compared to previous documentaries.

Hi there

Those comments from Mike would seem to say that the band (Mike and Tony) effectively gave control of the project to Eagle Rock and Universal. If this is the case, then they should be deemed as being extremely careless of their own heritage and totally negligent when it comes to that of the ex-members. I have never heard of a project such as this where some form of quality control was exercised by th eband or the people acting for them. Shameful really.

Probably both. They should know by now that others try to put their own stamp on projects (eg the In The Cage screen company in Come Rain or Shine), so should have kept a closer eye on it.

Steve rightly had complained about Genesis rewriting the history on Sum Of The Parts.
Good but in same way Armando Gallo in his new app had rewriting the Steve history deleting the image of his ex-wife Kim Poor......
Ah strange fate.........

I too found the documentary a waste of time. So apparently the extra 30 minutes is just a jam session? Is that really it? What a joke!
