« Thread started on: Sep 5th, 2014, 09:52am »

The absolute first Genesis Cover, seems recorder during 1967 and published in early 1968 for ARC (RCA) italian label, before FGTR: A Winter's Tale sang by an italian guy, Carlo Pavone the Rita's Pavone Brother.

In 1973 Peter Gabriel remember at New Musical Express journal:

"Rita Pavone's brother was the only person who'd actually recorded any of the songs apart from us," chuckles Gabriel. "There are still some songs we've written that are unsuitable for the band and which we'd like other people to record."

An odd choice for a cover tune, but an interesting listen. Thanks! If I were going to cover a very early Genesis song, I think I would go for "That's Me".

How could this have been recorded in 1967 when the Genesis version wasn't even released until 1968 (and wasn't even their first single that year)? Did this precede Genesis' own version or something?

Hi folks,
my researchs tell was a connection between Arthur Greenslade friend, Norrie Paramou and Rita Pavone (Carlo Pavone's sister).

Rita make some apparences at BBC1 TV during 1966 and 1967 (LONDON PALLADIUM SHOW,VAL DOONICAN SHOW,INTERNATIONAL CABARET, TOP OF THE POPS) and NORRIE PARAMOU will be Rita's producer.

Remember also that Jonathan King's arranger was KEN JONES, Norrie's studio arranger in 60's.

Then its possible that Rita's producer know about what Jonathan King was done in 1967 with Genesis.

Its more and more sure about recording date of the cover: SPRING 1967, one year before FGTR.

I've only become aware of this today and I'm really gob smacked to know that this exists. But how come you say this was recorded in 1967?
All the evidence suggests 1968 recorded and released. So what am I missing here?

For anyone that is interested in further details on the cover version of A Winter's Tale, then you'll find a detailed piece on it at www.Genesis-Movement.org linked via the home page.
