question Welsh Alt Rock Bands 1990s & Beyond
« Thread started on: Jul 22nd, 2014, 05:10am »

All these Welsh alternative rock bands first made an impression in the 1990s or later. Which is your favourite? My vote goes to Manic Street Preachers. Whilst I don't like everything they've released, they've made some excellent albums and singles. The new album Futurology sounds like a real return to form. I quite like Stereophonics but a compilation album of theirs suffices for me. In the case of Catatonia and Feeder, I have one studio album by each of them. What I've heard by Super Furry Animals is OK but doesn't really grab me. I think they sing a lot of their songs in Welsh which also makes it harder for me to identify with them. grin

Stereophonics, easily. I've heard at least three songs from all of these artists, and I liked Stereophonics enough to buy their greatest hits. Their impeccable cover of the Rod Stewart classic Handbags And Gladrags was the first of their songs that I listened to.

Oops, wrong door. Where's the poll about the Patagonian Yodel Ska bands from 1957, please?

Seriously, you couldn't have been more obscure? wink I don't even know half of these bands and those I do I know only by one or two songs.

Sorry if it's a bit too UK-centric. undecided

Easy: MSP! Can't stand the singers voice in Stereophonics, and anyone who covers handbags and gladrags should be shot anyway. Have a nice day annoyed too.

Catatonia always sounded like they'd not stay the distance, too reliant on the accent in the vocals. Don't like the other bands either.

"Simple! I'll have the musical talent of Steve Hackett" I replied!

I don't mind Kelly Jones's vocals, but I prefer their rockier material from the time of Performance And Cocktails, e.g. The Bartender And The Thief and Pick A Part That's New. By the mid-2000s, they were too middle of the road for me. I even remember a review that described them as something like "so middle of the road they've got a badger stuck to the bumper". grin Handbags And Gladrags is, in my opinion, one of those pointless cover versions as it sounds exactly the same as Rod Stewart's version. Elsewhere, I always thought that Kelly Jones was singing "have an arse day". grin

And indeed they didn't stay the distance. That said, I think that Mulder And Scully and Road Rage are classics of their time.

I thought that "Budgie" was a 1970s TV series starring Adam Faith. grin

I can't seem to vote On this iPad!! But although I think the Manics will win and they are probably my fave -I will go for Super Furry Animals as I remember them having quite a few good songs back in the 90s!! smiley
