xx What makes a song "bad" to you?
« Thread started on: Mar 31st, 2014, 10:06am »

Inspired by the "worst songs ever" thread.

It's easy to talk about "bad songs," but what is it that usually makes you not like a song?

In my case it's the following (in this order):
(1) Lyrics that are poorly written/dumb/etc.
(2) Lyrics that have a stupid/bad message
(3) Music that's bland, dull, pedestrian, etc.
(4) Badly sung, even by my fairly forgiving standards.

I can agree on that but I have to add that stupid lyrics have to be in my language to annoy me. Stupid lyrics in a foreign language don't bother me even when I can technically understand them and get the dumbness; it's still easier to ignore them when they're not in your mother tongue.

If a song is musically interesting I generally don't care much about the lyrics. But bad music and bad lyrics of course make it worse. One of my-most hated songs is "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt. Not only is the tune tepid and dull, but the message is moronic.... "I saw a beautiful woman, and I'll never get to have her so I'm sad." rolleyes Hate hate hate it.

Add to that the unnecessary use of the F word in the album version, (He's not "flying high" in that one!) and it's worse. That said, I'm not a James Blunt hater, and don't understand the scorn he attracts. Most of his stuff is acceptable radio fodder. I've certainly heard worse.

So, anything by Nerena Pallot, basically? grin

(Note, I may have spelt her name wrong. I don't care. I don't want google thinking I'm interested in her, so I'm not checking.)

I'm not familiar with Nerina Pallot, and I'm not planning on changing that fact.

1. Talentless musicians
2. Screamed lyrics
4. Death growls (one or two are okay, but incessant growling leaves me cold)
5. Sacreligious and anti-Christian sentiment
6. The F-word (Really? You couldn't come up with something more intelligent to say?)
7. Boring repetition of either lyrics or music within a song.

Not sure how that happened, but anyhoo....

3. Synthetic drumming. If it's not done on a traditonal drum kit, it's a big turn off for me. Especially if the drummer is respected and highly skilled; ie, Bill Bruford. On the Yes Union tour and ABWH tour, Bill played on an electronic drum kit. Very disappointing.

Ah, but Dusty, have you heard the alternative lyrics? This really made me laugh!

I think that many songs start off sounding mediocre to me, but because the song and/or the band/artist performing the song is massively hyped, the song ends up being bad as far as I'm concerned.
