xx Tony's keyboard sounds.
« Thread started on: Feb 20th, 2011, 12:34pm »

Hi,

Like many people on here I'm interested in re-creating some of Tony Banks' keyboard sounds.

Does anyone know what the 'D vamp' sound used in 'The Last Domino' is? I believe it was from the Yamaha DX7? Does anyone have a good sample of it?

Also curious to know what the sound is that Tony used for 'Firth of Fifth' in the Old Medley on the 1992 tour? He plays it on the Roland JD-800 but I'm pretty sure it isn't a standard preset, so must be coming from his rack?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Regards,

Chris.

Hi,

For domino, it's from the DX7/TX7/TX816 (and TX802). Not sure what the preset is. You can sample the sound from the WCD tour dvd.

However, it is the same sound he uses for land of confusion and anything she does.

As Firth of Fifth is concerned, not sure what he uses there. Could be JD800, Wavestation or a sample from the quadra/synclavier. It's a bit difficult to hear.

The organ however is from the Voce DMI 64 MKII and it's preset number 3.

From listening to the presets on SynthMania.com of the Yamaha DX-7, these sounds come pretty close:

Bits of this:
Harpsichord

Bits of this:
Clavinet

Bits of the synth bass underbelly in it:
Synth Bass

I heard a demo on YouTube of the DX-7 that comes very close to the sound you're looking for, but no name was listed for it. I've asked the author of the video for the preset name. Hopefully they will respond! smiley

The TX802 has a preset called Wirestrung A which has those characters combined. However, it does miss some of it's more throaty quality which some of the clavinet presets have.

I use samples of the Wirestrung (which I sampled from my TX7 which I sold last year) combined with the ones from the WCD dvd and some delay/chorus/reverb. Does the trick (gives it a bit more character and dynamics).

However, its not 100% it for land of confusion or anything she does…

The LOC/ASD sound was discussed here a few years ago:

Not exactly solving the issue, but might be useful to take on board.

Thank you for all your responses so far on this smiley

Santi - I have just aquired a Yamaha TX7, just getting to grips with it! You mention that you had the 'wirestrung' sound on your TX7, how did you get hold of it as it's not a standard preset? Can the bank be downloaded anywhere?

The 1992 'Firth of Fifth' patch remains a mystery...!

Chris.

@chris: I have 262 MB worth of DX7, TX816, TX802, TX81Z and FM7 stuff. It must somewhere in there but the question is where… DX7 sounds can be obtained from the internet from various forums, yahoo user groups, mailinglists etc. Wirestrung is from the TX802 factory presets.

I experimented a lot with FM7 and went trough already more then 2000 sounds from the DX7 and also the TX816 (by using 8 instances of fm7) a couple of days ago. So far nothing…

As far as I know, tony used a single TX7 on the WCD tour. This would suggest that all the sounds he uses would be playable from 1 unit which makes it not a combination of sounds (like the TX802 and the TX816 can do).

As has been mentioned, it was based on the "Wirestring" preset from the DX7 (or whatever version Tony was using). Just today, I tried to program something similar on my Yamaha Motif - I think it comes pretty close. I also had a go at the lead sound from the next section.

You can check them out here:

If you're using a Motif, I would be happy to send you the patches.

They sound spot on! I use a Roland Fantom for my samples, not sure what format the Motif uses? Send them on over and I'll have a play - chrisondrums@hotmail.com

Many thanks for this! smiley

I programmed them on the Motif, so obviously the actual programs won't be compatible with your Fantom, but I would be happy to sample the bass sound for you (you only need to play four notes, after all). Let me know how you go with Andy's file first.

Happy to sample the lead sound for you too, but it's something you could quite easily program yourself on the Fantom. Just start with a "Bright Saw" wave equivalent, and adjust the cutoff, filter EG and amp EG to taste. Route an LFO to pitch with a short delay and a fairly fast rate.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help.

Andy - if you are meaning the bank for the DX7 (or TX7), then no need to send me it as I have now sold my TX7! Thanks for the offer though.

Kyle - a sample of your Motif bass note would be great!

Thanks again,

Chris.
