question Man Of Our Times vs. Misunderstanding
« Thread started on: Dec 6th, 2017, 04:59am »

These two songs are most often selected as the worst two on Duke by fans.

My least favourite track on the album is easily Misunderstanding, but funnily enough I consider Man Of Our Times the album's second-best and their most underrated song by far. These two songs are a chasm apart in quality to me.

Never understood the hatred for Misunderstanding. Sure, it's more of a Phil solo song than a Genesis song, but it's a pretty good song all the same, flows nicely and gets the (perfectly valid, more than I can say for No Son of Mine) message across OK.

Man of our times, is just a racket. (Basil Fawlty: "Racket?? That's Rutherford. Rutherford's second racket!") grin

As has been said, the outtakes are better than some of the inclusions. Still, for the post-Hackett era, Duke is a giant among men.

I don't find Misunderstanding horrible, just unremarkable. I also find it lifts a little too much from Hot Fun in the Summertime.

I far prefer Man of Our Times. Its lumbering, lurchy, pounding riff reminds me a bit of Back in NYC. Not a surprise Mike wrote both riffs.

I prefer Misunderstanding. I don't see either of both songs as bad at all.

The term Hackett-era always puzzled me. It's almost Christmas though and I don't feel feisty at all but someday I'd like to get to the bottom of that. wink

Perhaps I am wrong but I don't think it is generally disliked, rather not highly rated which in my book would be a fair assessment.

I don’t hate ‘Misunderstanding’ but there’s no real competition here. I LOVE ‘MOOT’!! Don’t understand the haters at all.

I wonder if I find Misunderstanding particularly grating because it's on Duke, where it should never be imo, it's like having a fleck on a beautiful painting and I guess it must be it. It would have never been on my radar, had it been released by another artist but I would have had the luxury to simply dismiss it. On Duke it is hard to swallow. The intro alone sounds like somebody learning to play the piano.

I love both songs, but I prefer Man Of Our Times over Misunderstanding. I should mention that the latter was actually the second song that helped bring me to Genesis (Turn It On Again being the first).

Side note: The last part of the live version of Misunderstanding on THREE SIDES LIVE is really annoying ("Theremustbesometheremustbesometheremustbesome...").

If we're playing the "leave a song off Duke" game I'd have picked Alone Tonight by a mile. I find the whole song just a bit dull, while Misunderstanding brings some energy and Man of Our Times some heavy-ness.

But I also think Duke is such a great album because it had all three, not in spite of it.

I quite like "Man Of Our Times". It has a fun, circus-like atmosphere but with a darker edge. I do not like "Misunderstanding". I find it musically tepid and lyrically inane. tongue
