Judging from the credits, starting from Trick, there was no deal, that would be also confirmed by the fact that Steve left because allegedly he couldn't have 25% of the album for himself, add that Phil was basically just blossoming as a songwriter, you can easily surmise the absence of any such deal.

But then, there was also the issue on Steve's departure about solo albums, and they all then went on to issue one apiece within a couple of years, so I think that assumption is dead in the water.

As you said, within a couple of years......I truly don't have an answer to that: Steve left, I believe because he felt his input as a writer wasn't appreciated enough and I would add, as a player, he was quite stifled by Tony. He released two solo albums without any particular fuss from the others, my personal guess is, he wasn't really missed in that department. it was a whole different story when Peter decided to take a leave of absence from the band.
I would venture the problem was mainly timing.
Perhaps and again, I truly don't know, they felt the band should have been the main focus but eventually of course, things change and around 78 perhaps they believed it was time to try new things, without jeopardizing the band. Things change, I think we can all agree that in Genesis timeline 74, 76 and 78 are very different periods. Who knows? I personally always found odd that they went on to record Trick, which was undoubtedly a crucial moment in the band's history, while Steve was recording a solo album.

Wasn't one of the main things that changed in 78/79 an enforced hiatus in band activity due to Phil temporarily moving to Canada to try to save his marriage?

That too of course but I also think their attitude had changed and the band were in a different place.
They told Phil to sort out his things and went on to record their solo albums.
I don't recall the same empathy when Peter's first wife had trouble with her pregnancy. They were younger, much more driven and intense and in a way they were still struggling as a band.

One, PDT was well after departure, and I doubt they cared much what he did by then! wink

I stand corrected it of course, although, I am still under the impression they didn't overly care what he did and when he did it.

From the Calling All Stations album, Run Out Of Time would have made a better choice than Uncertain Weather

I had forgotten about that (if I've heard it before, that is). Glad to have been of some assistance regarding Genesis. grin

I don't understand why everyone seems to think You Might Recall is some sort of lost classic. It's not a bad song, but it's nothing special. I'd much rather have seen the rumoured Dodo suite containing Naminanu & Submarine make it onto Abacab.

Anyway, my vote goes to Inside And Out. The song section is exceptionally beautiful, and the somewhat Yes-like instrumental climax gives me goosebumps. I'd include it instead of Your Own Special Way, which is nice but clearly inferior and still could have been released as a non-album single.

I can't speak for the rest but personally, it is not that I deem YMR a lost classic, I'm with you, it's an OK song, fact is that I think so little of the material on Abacab, apart from a few songs, that I truly believe that one would have raised the bar and again, given what made the final cut on the album, it is a bit uncomprehensible, more than others imo.

I can't seem to cast a vote (maybe the poll has closed, maybe it's my phone?), but I have to choose It's Yourself. I mixed it back in to Los Endos! If Ripples or Mad Man Moon we're shorter, it would have fit on the album!

The only other example that crosses my mind is You Might Recall, one of my favorites from the Abacab sessions. It could have easily replaced Like It Or Not.

Those are all good choices, but why didn't "Feeding The Fire" make the list? That would have been much better than "In Too Deep" on IT.

You can only make eight options for a poll. Just select "Other".
