The Knife - 10
Looking for Someone - 10
White Mountain - 10
Dusk - 10
Visions of Angels - 10

One of my favourite ever Genesis albums.I was expecting so little when I first bought and played it,but it quite literally blew me away...and still not even a sniff of Collins & Hackett in sight!!!!

Wish this line had done just one more album together with perhaps Collins on drums and backing vocals....

Couldn't agree more. It's a terribly underrated album, even amongst Genesis fans.

Not by me. One of my favorite Genesis albums.

1) Stagnation
2) Dusk
3) White Mountain
4) Visions Of Angels
5) Looking For Someone
6) The Knife.

The Knife starts really great in this mood of Rondo by the Nice, but the closing section really annoys and spoils it for me. I always stop listening, when this section starts.

Assuming that a 10 would be on a par with Supper's Ready or The Cinema Show, I'd be inclined to say:

Stagnation - 9
Dusk - 8
White Mountain - 7
Visions of Angels - 7
The Knife - 7
Looking for Someone - 7

Although "Dusk" is sometimes my favourite because I think it has such a unique atmosphere. In fact, similarly, I would probably say that Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot are in many ways "better" than Trespass... but Trespass just has a different, special feel to it which is just perfect sometimes.

The Knife (9) - Genesis discovers what would become their early sound.

Stagnation (8) - I consider it the first classic Genesis song, assuming it was written before "The Knife". The '07 remix fixes that bad tape splice we'd been listening to for decades.

White Mountain (8) - Maybe not the band's first story song, but the first one that really works.

Dusk (6) - This one belongs on FGTR, imo. But, like Stagnation, has a haunting atmosphere. I'm unsure if I prefer the version on Archive 1.

Looking for Someone (6) - I've never been able to figure out the lyrics, but there is some good music here, even if it's a bit uneven.

Visions of Angels (5) - Lyrically, similar to "Dusk". I think the later line-up might have been able to knock this song out of the park, but it never quite gets going for me.

Mindful of how I would likely rate songs on other Genesis albums...

1. Stagnation (9.5)
2. Dusk (7.5)
3. White Mountain (7)
4. Visions Of Angels (7)
5. Looking For Someone (6)
6. The Knife (5.5)

I sort of agree. I love the beginning, it works great in contrast to the ending of Dusk but for me it seems to run out of steam after that exhilarating opening minute or so.

Funny, for me the 2nd half of The Knife is definitely better than the 1st half. The 1st half with the verses and choruses lays the foundation of the song but it doesn't have the dynamics yet that are to follow; the quiet part in the middle then builds up tension that finally gets released in the awesome guitar solo; the solo builds up more and more, finally it leads into that part which is almost heavy metal with the riffing and the hammond over it. The guitar solo is where I always start headbanging and I won't stop till the song is over cool
