question 1970 to 1977 vs. 1978 to 1998
« Thread started on: Jul 19th, 2017, 3:16pm »

If you were to be exiled to a desert island and asked which of these two sets of Genesis studio albums you'd like to spend the rest of your life with, which would you choose?
  • Trespass
  • Nursery Cryme
  • Foxtrot
  • Selling England by the Pound
  • The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  • A Trick of the Tail
  • Wind & Wuthering
OR
  • And There Were Three
  • Duke
  • Abacab
  • Genesis
  • Invisible Touch
  • We Can't Dance
  • Calling All Stations

i'm sure that if i chose one of those packs i would miss the other.

the disadvantage of the second option is that there's an album i'd rarely listen to: 'calling all stations'. it's not bad, but i have no emotional attachment to it.

however, i would listen equally often to all of the albums from 'trespass' to 'wind and wuthering'.

That's exactly how I would feel. I'll take the earlier years though (but not by much).

This looks like it's going to be a walkover for the earlier period.
1970-1974 vs 1976-1980 would be a closer contest, with 1981-98 trailing in a distant 3rd ....

I effectively made the choice years ago, when I started buying CDs.

Although I had everything up to Abacab on vinyl, I've never bothered to go beyond W&W on CD.

I went with '78-'98, simply cos that's the music I heard all the time on the radio when I was a kid, and the material that got me into Genesis in the first place. I am an "all eras fan," but for nostalgic reasons Genesis, IT and WCD will always have a special place with me.

Although I would pick the first era, that choice is somewhat deceiving as I would take several of the second era albums over the first 3 in the first era.

This is pretty much my thinking too. I'd have to pick 1st era, as The Lamb is one of my all-time favourite albums by any artist and certainly my favourite Genesis album, but I prefer Duke and Abacab to Trick and W&W.

I picked the first period obviously but I feel it should have been extended to 1980.
I believe that up until that point, defections notwithstanding, things were done in a certain way and with a certain spirit which changed with new decade.

Not a difficult choice. I would miss the best bits of ATTWT though.
