I bet there are a few diehards who would say Genesis started to go downhill from the moment Chris Stewart left....

Unfortunately, John Silver’s jauntily inventive use of biscuit tins (allegedly) in “The Magic of Time” isn’t a sufficient achievement to justify voting for him grin

I'm sure this was just a bit of fun, but is there really any doubt as to who the best Genesis drummer is/was?

I suppose some will be Bruford fans - as I am - but he was a hired hand for 1 year - Collins was there from August 1970. So I don't think Bruford - in spite of his ability - can claim to be the better drummer "in Genesis" than Collins is, can he?

And in terms of who should be on the poll, then personally I would suggest Chris Stewart qualifies ahead of Mike Rutherford but I guess I've learned something by his inclusion that I didn't know, so thanks for that. grin

Why? Would you deny that? They clearly ousted Chris to be able sell out. He would have never allowed that.

If we refer not to Genesis songs explicitly but to playing abilities in general it gets pretty tough to decide who is better, Bruford or Collins. Both have proven to be incredibly versatile. For Genesis though, from the bootlegs of the Trick tour I heard I found Bruford was at the wrong place and he was right to leave: his job with Genesis seemed not fulfilling for him, he is not the one who enjoys playing a song in the exact same way over and over - and that again could be described as a weakness. A song such as Carpet Crawlers needs a drummer who restrains himself and doesn't add anything that doesn't belong there. Bruford is best when he doesn't have to restrain himself.

+1

Think Collins, because of his huge diversity in his music. His discovery with artists is huge including my favourite band Camel. He was more famous for that jazz/fusion style of play with bands such as Brand X and Nova..

Bruford is another brilliant drummer smiley

tony can sing (he didn't do it bad on his solo album 'the fugitive') and mike can play drums rolleyes ...so, when phil left, genesis could have become a duo. shocked

I agree with all you have said there. I was thinking strictly within the ranks of Genesis who did the best work. But outside of Genesis I think Bruford is arguably better. But only just - they are (or were at their peak) among the very best drummers rock music ever produced.
