xx No love for FGTR / CAS?
« Thread started on: Mar 10th, 2017, 07:54am »

I've noticed that there isn't a lot of love around here for Genesis' first or last studio albums. Both are often treated as black sheep or nonentities; when a question calls for listing all of Genesis' albums in some form, many people omit them from their lists entirely.

So I'd like to take an actual poll. How many people like & listen to these albums, and how many don't like them? If you don't even have one or both of them, count it as "don't like."

For my part, I like both FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION and CALLING ALL STATIONS, and listen to each of them about as often as any other Genesis album.

I've noticed a prevalently dismissive sentiment of CAS in other music forums, I hadn't really noticed it much here though.

For the record, I not only like CAS, I actually prefer it to the two previous studio albums.

As for FGTR, I clicked LIKE for that one too, though admittedly my feelings for it are probably founded on sheer sentimentality, the fact it is a curious oddity and the music being non-bothersome.

I like both of them and see them clearly as regular albums like any other Genesis album. None of these two is among my top favourites but that can be said about a number of other Genesis albums as well. Also, I regard those endless "they should have released these albums under a different band name" discussions as ridiculous and pointless.

I think they are two completelely different and separate cases that cannot be lumped together:
FGTR is just an experience they had when they were teens, had no precise identity and had zero control. They don't consider it a Genesis album themselves, they have said so on several occasions. If Tresapass can be considered 'green' I don't know what we can call FGTR. It doesn't do much for me anyway.
CAS is a last attempt to keep something going, some fans don't consider it Genesis because they identify late period Genesis with Phil but to my ears it is more Genesis than other releases and how could it be any different with Tony and Mike on board? I like it, don't love it.

they are the most "marginal" genesis albums, but i like them both more than i would like to admit. i haven't listened to them in ages, but i recall that i used to enjoy them.

i think that 'calling all stations' belongs with the solo projects. tony and mike recorded an album with a singer they recruited. that's exactly what they did for their side projects. the difference was that both tony and mike were involved on 'calling all stations'.

Not a minor difference, wouldn't you say? I could probably agree with you if the the record wouldn't sound like Genesis....But it does. On their solo records they try to collaborate with other musicians have more of their input, on CAS Ray's contribution was limited. Already on his solo records, everything Tony does, even when he is trying to consciously steer away from it, sounds like Genesis. I don't think he can help it, he's always been the core and backbone of the band's sound. I am obviously not dismissing or denying Phil's contribution beacuse he is missed on CAS but it is fairly impossible imo that Mike and Tony together generate music that doesn't sound like the band they founded, they have been in for decades and have influenced heavily.

I certainly like them both, but, at the same time, I think I'd have to say they are my two least favourite Genesis albums.

They are two of my least favorite Genesis albums, and for me they offer less of what I like to hear than the rest of their albums.

Which really doesn't bother me in the slightest. Genesis produced a massive catalog in their 30 years as a band, that two or three albums don't wow me quite the same as the rest isn't a slight at all.

For me, FGTR is forgettable. The songs seem very bland to me. I do like a fair amount of CAS though. I haven't listened to the album as a whole in a while, but there are certain songs I listen to quite often such as "Congo" and "The Dividing Line". Other songs such as "Shipwrecked" and "Alien Afternoon" excite me just as much as FGTR does.

I've never really got into FGTR, despite a good few plays over the years.

I love CAS, and think it was a hit single away from being a hugely successful album.
