« Thread started on: Mar 8th, 2017, 09:25am »

As usual apologies, as this might have been done already but just curious; do you have songs you regularly skip?
I assume we are all fans here, yet I’m sure there must be songs you cannot be bothered with and I’m not talking about the least favorite just those that spoil your listening experience and you prefer to avoid.
Mine would be:

From Genesis to revelation: I guess the whole Album
Trespass: None
Nursery Cryme: Harold the Barrel… On occasions
Foxtrot: None
Selling England by the Pound: None
The Lamb lies down on Broadway: The Waiting Room
A Trick of the Tail: None
Wind&Wuthering: None
ATTW3: Ballad of Big-Scenes from a Nightdream-The Lady lies
Duke-Misunderstanding
Abacab: Whodunnit-Like it or not-Another Record.
Genesis: Just a job to do, although depending on the mood there might be some other casualties on the B side
Invisible Touch: Invisible Touch- Into Deep-Anything she Does
WCD: I can’t Dance-Never a Time-Tell me why-Living Forever-Hold on my Heart-Way of the World- Since I lost you
CAS: Congo-Small Talk-Alien Afternoon-One man’s Fool

I'm not a skipper in general, I generally prefer to let albums play as a whole. There are skippers on other albums, meaning I tend to move my finger to the skip button - but I honestly can't think on any such track on a Genesis album.

As I do not own a CD copy of Abacab (I own the iTunes download) I don't need to skip WD?. I just deleted it from my iTunes Library and thus I am no longer bothered by it (although I almost never listen to the album anyway - even without that track, it's still a pretty weak album, easily their second worst).

Whenever I listen to Duke, I skip Misunderstanding. Whenever I listen to WCD, I skip Since I Lost You.

And that's it! grin I love this band far too much to skip anything else. Not even anything from FGTR - which, interestingly, is starting to grow on me. smiley

Hell, the very idea of skipping tracks as good as Visions Of Angels, Scenes From A Night's Dream and Never A Time? I could not bring myself to do that! shocked And especially not One Man's Fool - not just a great track, but a remarkable closer to their final album! cool

I guess skippng can be chalked up to several factors: technology in first place made it possible, you didn't want to mess around much with vinyls, that also changed our attitude towards records as whole piece of work which had to be listened to in their entirety, In my case I would add age, when I was a student I could devote hours to music, I had the time and the leisure, now I have neither. Also after decades of listening to a band, even when it is your favorite one like in this case, you get a bit more critical and stop being unconditional. I love them to bits, they had their weak moments though, no shame in that.

I usually only listen to music in my car on CDR copies, which are often customized. The only way I would "skip" a song is to leave it off the CDR copy completely, which rarely happens.

There aren't any actual Genesis songs I've omitted as such, unless you count (1) tracks from ARCHIVE 1, disc 4 that duplicate songs from FGTR; and (2) a few selected tracks from THE WAY WE WALK: THE SHORTS.

None. I've been listening to Genesis for so long now, that none of it bothers me. Even songs I tend to dislike, such as, "Hold On My Heart" and "In Too Deep"play in their entirety. Now, I may end an album early if I get distracted by something, but I'm not a skipper.

Disclaimer: In my younger days, I might skip "Whodunnit" and "Waiting Room".

I haven't regularly listened to Genesis albums for years, I mainly listen to compilation discs I made up some time ago. But recently I've started to listen to the albums again, though only some. If I did play them regularly, it'd be:

FGTR: I never listen to it.

Trespass: White Mountain, Visions, Dusk.

Nursery Cryme: Hogweed, Harold

Foxtrot: Time Table, Friday

Selling England by the Pound: Battle

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway: None

A Trick of the Tail: Mad Man Moon, Robbery

Wind & Wuthering: Everything except the last 4 tracks

ATTW3: Everything except Down & Out, Undertow, Many Too Many, FYFM

Duke: Heathaze, Alone Tonight, Please Don't Ask

Abacab: None

Genesis: Illegal Alien, usually Taking & Just A Job as well

Invisible Touch: Anything She Does

WCD: Everything except No Son, ICD, Fading Lights, Hold On

CAS: Alien Afternoon (though the intro is great - what a massive let-down it then turns into), Small Talk.

I never skip songs.

The only parts I skip regularly are some of Phil's routines or lengthy song intros when I'm listening to unofficial live recordings.

This relates closely to the least favorite tracks thread, but I'll put it here too:

Trespass: Dusk (Just never got into it)
Nursery Crime: Seven Stones (don't like Peter's vocals in this one, and just sounds abit...muddy overall IMO)
Foxtrot: Time Table (my least favorite Genesis song)
SEBTP: none
Lamb...: Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats (complete filler IMO)
ATOTT: None
W&W: None
ATTWT: Ballad of Big (only listen to it sometimes)
Duke: Man Of Our Times (Man, that TRASH CYMBAL!!)
Abacab: Another Record (never will understand why this was put on in place of several other B-sides!)
Genesis: None
IT: None
WCD: My favorite album so...none
CAS: If That's What You Need (IMO an 'unfinished' sounding attempt at recreating Hold On My Heart)

And I would say B-sides I always skip would mainly be: Me and Virgil, and Run out of Time. I quite love all the others!

Skipping a Genesis song? What a preposterous idea!! I’m too much of a loyal fan to do that, I guess. ;-) Also, I regard albums as whole works to be listened to from beginning to end. That’s the most frequent way I listen to music. Almost no cherry-picking or playlists for me!

I have made a library of MP3s on my computer. Every album has it’s own folder and an extra folder for B sides. When I listen to the B sides of Calling All Stations I have to say I feel a bit uncomfortable listening to “Banjo Man”, but I don’t skip it.

On the other hand, sometimes I actually choose to listen only to parts of an album. For instance with the Shapes (1983) and WCD albums I enjoy the second side a lot, because those songs were not hit singles and are a bit forgotten. The singles were played on radio and TV back in the days and are on the live albums, so I know them inside and out.

I understand quite a few Genesis fans have problems with “The Waiting Room” and “Whodunnit”. I actually like TWR a lot, and “Whodunnit” I regard as a fun moment not to be taken too seriously.
