xx Hold On My Heart - meaning?
« Thread started on: Feb 23rd, 2017, 7:10pm »

Greetings

Obviously, a love song. But, what exactly is the story about? So, there's three characters in the story. The character singing the words, and a character referred to as "you", and a character referred to as "her" (no jokes about a threesome). What's it all about?

Regards
The Captain.

"Hold On My Heart"

Hold on my heart
just hold on to that feeling
we both know we've been here before
we both know what can happen
Hold on my heart
cos I'm looking over your shoulder
ooh please don't rush in this time
don't show her how you feel

Hold on my heart
throw me a lifeline
I'll keep a place for you
somewhere deep inside

So hold on my heart
please tell her to be patient
cos there has never been a time
that I wanted something more

If I can recall this feeling
and I know there's a chance
oh I will be there
yes I will be there
be there for you
whenever you want me to
whenever you call oh I will be there
Yes I will be there

Hold on my heart
don't let her see you crying
no matter where I go
she'll always be with me

So hold on my heart
just hold on to that feeling
we both know we've been here before
we both know what can happen
So hold on my heart...

Didn't Phil say in autobiography this was written when he was falling in love again but he was telling himself not rush into anything again because of his previous failures?

I don't remember that in the book (not to say it wasn't). In any event, the lyrics are not by Phil. Can't remember if Mike or Tony. Plus, Phil wasn't falling in love again at the time of writing the album. That happened during the WCD tour. smiley

As Yild says, it's about moving on from failure and the usage of positive thoughts to soothe heartache. The song is about a male construct who previously had his heart broken, and is now thinking of what went wrong and how to approach his new love without making the same mistakes. The reason why it sounds like he's addressing his love, when she isn't there, is because he's picturing it; he loves her inside his imagination, and his heart, because in those places, he is safe from rejection and heartbreak. smiley

It's a bit confusing, I know... I just think it's an enchanting "fallen in love" song. I adore it and try not to analyse it too much. wink

Thank you. That's how I originally perceived it too. But I think I just got myself overly confused when trying to read deeper into it of recent.

Wasn't this the track that was once called 'Hold Onto My Heart' before they shortened it as they didn't feel that title was quite right?

hmmm, the problem is that "hold onto my heart" wouldn't match the music. there's an extra syllable.

So this is all according to memory, I don't have any actual quote to support this, but I remember in a radio interview around the time of the album's release, that either Phil or Mike claimed the working title for the song was Hole In My Heart but was later changed to Hold On My Heart because it sounded "too medical".

If I am correct in my memory of the comment, then it changed the tone of the song quite significantly from a sad song to a rather hopeful song.
