This may be even harder...

Supper's Ready
Los Endos
The Fountain Of Salmacis
Duke's End
Afterglow
The Knife
Aisle Of Plenty
It
One Man's Fool
Fading Lights
The Brazilian
Follow You, Follow Me
Another Record
It's Gonna Get Better (edited album version - full version would be rated higher)
A Place To Call My Own

For me, the best closer has got to be Los Endos. One of the best closers on any album, in any genre, from any era, imo. cool
(Sorry if I appear to be sitting on the fence here... tongue )

Duke's End
Follow You, Follow Me
The Knife
The Brazilian
Aisle Of Plenty
It-I just hate how they ended a spectacular album

Once again, I won't do all of them, but rather my top 5:

1. Duke's End (by far the best album ending/song finale ever-basically like a recap of all we just experienced!)
2. Fading Lights (An emotional end to Phil's last Genesis album-hopefully not forever! wink )
3. Supper's Ready (A great way to end an album, after such an epic piece)
4. Afterglow (especially when you consider the last three tracks as one, which I do)
5. Los Endos (a perfect ending, just not my favorite)

Honorable mentions would be:

It. (reminds me of an ending theme song to a sitcom, or grand finale piece for a musical)

And:

Fountain of Salmacis (an epic, grand ending to the album)

The weakest ending IMO is Another Record. Honestly that was a horrible way to end an album, and IMO that song should have been a b-side rather than Paperlate or You Might Recall (which are way better IMO). I would've ended Abacab with Like It Or Not. But really that's not much better. It's tough to find a good ending track for such an experimental album really.

I actually don't think Duke's Travels should count as part of the album closer. It segues nicely into Duke's End, but it's still technically the penultimate track; it would be like counting The Cinema Show as the closing track of SEBTP.

Older CD editions made The Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty one track...

Really? huh I just Googled images of the back cover of the SEBTP CD, and all versions displayed have those songs as two individual tracks.

I have the 1985 Sonopress copy, one of the first, and it has them separate, but even so, that wouldn't make it right if it were to be mastered as one track. There was a lot of misunderstanding in early CD mastering, and this sort of thing was just one of the issues.

I have SEBTP on an old vinyl LP, and the label on side two has the last track as "3. THE CINEMA SHOW - AISLE OF PLENTY".

Actually, as I was thinking about my potential answer to this thread, I thought that it didn't really seem fair to include Aisle of Plenty, and actually it might be better to think of "The Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty" as the album closer.

I agree.
I don't think Aisle of Plenty really stands as a song on its own; and because of its smooth transition from Cinema Show, I always just regarded it as the coda to that song.
