Firstly I am a Newbie so I do not wish to post anything that upsets people.
The way I see things is--
After "Lamb" and the massive pressure of the tour and fame I believe Peter just felt he was "burnt out" and after the difficult birth of his child he just wanted to go home to his wife and baby and who would blame him?
What the band should have done then in my humble opinion was to say "yes we will have a couple of years off no problem" Tony and Mike work on new material in the studio and record for Peters return. Bloody record company says no we want another. Phil sang along with the guys that auditioned and Tony and Mike said "Hey Phil you are better than any of these!" Phil said "Oh I would be very nervous, I not sure if I could be a frontman but I will give it a go"

I don't think it was record company pressure to put out an album right after the Lamb. They were bursting with musical ideas and finally starting to gain momentum outside Europe.
To have just stopped at that moment to wait for Peter to make a decision would have ended the band. Mike and Tony probably would have followed Steve's lead and made a solo album, Phil would have wandered off and joined seven other bands playing drums, and after a couple years of that I doubt any of them would have felt a strong urge to reform, with or without Peter.
Phil Collins: 9/90 - Chapel Hill 6/94 - Raleigh 9/04 - Washington DC Peter Gabriel: 6/03 - Washington DC Genesis: 9/07 - Washington DC Musical Box: 11/11 - Philadelphia 7/14 - Asheville Steve Hackett 10/13 - Philadelphia 11/14 - Philadelphia

Interesting perspective and probably accurate as far as Phil is concerned. I believe Tony and Mike would have wanted to and Steve, well, probablly under certain conditions.
