The actual opening track is "When The Sour Turns To Sweet." "The Silent Sun" (mono) is just a bonus track that's added to the beginning of some FGTR reissues.

Anyway, I'm finding it hard to rank them, but here is what I come up with now (could be different on a different day):

Eleventh Earl Of Mar
Dance On A Volcano
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
Behind The Lines
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Abacab
Looking For Someone
The Musical Box
Watcher Of The Skies
Down And Out
Mama (I prefer the long version, of course)
Where The Sour Turns To Sweet
No Son Of Mine
Invisible Touch
Calling All Stations

Okay, thanks. I thought it might be something like that... don't make no nevermind to my rankings. smiley

1. dance on a volcano
2. the musical box
3. watcher of the skies
4. no son of mine
5. behind the lines
6. abacab
7. the lamb lies down on broadway
8. looking for someone
9. mama
10. invisible touch
11. eleventh earl of mar
12. dancing with the moonlit knight
13. down and out

there are two aspects here: how much you like those songs as such songs, and how well you think they work as album openers.

i don't dislike invisible touch, but i think it was a terrible choice for an opening track.

As always, these are just my opinions.

As individual songs:

1. Abacab
2. The Musical Box
3. Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
4. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
5. Behind The Lines
6. Mama
7. Watcher Of The Skies
8. Dance On A Volcano
9. Eleventh Earl Of Mar
10. Down And Out
11. Invisible Touch
12. No Son Of Mine
13. Looking For Someone
14. Calling All Stations
15. Where The Sour Turns To Sweet

*1-10 are great
*11-13 are good
*14 is decent
*15 is bland

As album openers:

1. Watcher Of The Skies
2. Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
3. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
4. Behind The Lines
5. Dance On A Volcano
6. No Son Of Mine
7. Mama
8. Eleventh Earl Of Mar
9. Down And Out
10. The Musical Box
11. Abacab
12. Calling All Stations
13. Looking For Someone
14. Invisible Touch
15. Where The Sour Turns To Sweet

*1-6 are great
*7-11 are good
*12-13 are decent
*14-15 don't seem like opening tracks to me

Oh I like rael1974's dual approach above, I'm copying that.

How much I like the individual songs:

Behind The Lines
Down & Out
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
Mama
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Looking For Someone
The Musical Box
Watcher Of The Skies
Abacab
Dance On A Volcano
Invisible Touch
No Son Of Mine
Calling All Stations
Eleventh Earl Of Mar

How well I think they work as openers:

Behind The Lines
Watcher Of The Skies
Dance On A Volcano
Eleventh Earl Of Mar
Looking For Someone
Down & Out
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
Abacab
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Calling All Stations

These remaining ones don't sound like opening tracks to me:

Mama
The Musical Box
Invisible Touch
No Son Of Mine

Interesting exercise.

I won't rank all of them, but I'll just state my top few:

1. Down and Out (not a favorite by any means, but IMO the best intro to a Genesis album)
2. Dance On A Volcano (almost made my #1. A great song, begun in a great way)
3. Behind The Lines (Love the bombastic, frantic intro)
4. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Great mood setter to kick off a long, involved album)
5. No Son Of Mine (Although I actually feel On The Shoreline would be an even better opener for WCD)

This was tough. I'd also count Eleventh Earl of Mar and Moonlit Knight to be great album intros as well.

Again prefer not to rank them all but my top 5 in my order of today but it changes daily!

1) Eleventh Earl Of Mar
2) Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
3) The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
4) Watcher Of The Skies
5) Behind The Lines

I especially love the live version of Eleventh Earl of Mar from the 1978 tour as Knebworth was my first site of Genesis live....

Kind of twisting this around a little bit, here are some certain albums where I feel different songs on those albums would've been better openers:

Trespass: White Mountain ( would've created a much better mood for the introduction)
Abacab: Dodo/Lurker (would've started the album with a more bombastic and dramatic intro, similar to duke)
Mama: Illegal Alien (I know this one might be controversial since several fans here don't like that song, but I happen to love it – and IMO that sound effect intro with the radio tuning, not to mention the opening lyrics of waking up in the morning seem to lend itself well to the beginning of an album)
Invisible Touch: Tonight Tonight Tonight (IMO the song invisible touch is the weakest opening out of all of Genesis different albums. I feel Tonight x3 would begin the album with a much better mood and atmosphere to kick things off)
We Can't Dance: On the shoreline (As I mentioned in my last post, I actually feel that on the shoreline would be a much better song to open the album with)

Of course I feel the need to say here that this doesn't mean I think the openings for the each of those albums are bad necessarily, but rather these are the songs I would've preferred. I understand completely why they choose what they did. But you know…
