« Thread started on: Sep 23rd, 2016, 01:21am »

Over the years, my taste in Genesis has varied like most fans have experienced (I assume). I thought it would be interesting to make a thread to show this.

Songs that I didn't like in the past that I do like now include:

Happy The Man
Get 'Em Out By Friday
The Battle Of Epping Forest
Twilight Alehouse
Robbery, Assault, And Battery
It's Yourself
Dodo/Lurker
Mama (I'm as surprised as you are.)
Home By The Sea (This one too.)
Second Home By The Sea (...and this one as well.)
Illegal Alien
The Dividing Line

Songs that I used to love, but don't like as much as I used to include:

Your Own Special Way
Many Too Many
The Day The Light Went Out
Man On The Corner
Paperlate
Taking It All Too Hard
Invisible Touch
In Too Deep
Anything She Does
Jesus He Knows Me
Way Of The World
Calling All Stations
(I still like all of these songs though)

What about you?

This is exactly what I was thinking about the other day, when I made that favorite songs thread. I was unsure which ones to add, and so I went with the process of elimination. Very soon, I found many of the songs I used to consider favorites, I just couldn't find the same rush I got out of them the first few times I heard them. Some include: IT, Domino, That's all, and The Dividing line. I used to listen to these songs everyday, and now, well, it's just not the same. On the other hand, Abacab, for example, had had something similar happen to it. But, like a phoenix, it rose out of the ashes, and is now one of my favorites. Funny how things change.

I completely agree. One other thing I could have mentioned was my change in preference for the different eras as a whole. When I first started exploring Genesis beyond their hits and singles, I didn't like any of their music before ...And Then There Were Three.... The nonstandard time signatures of the pre-trio era songs were too weird for me. Eventually I came around to the progressive stuff. Now I love the prog and pop eras equally.

I cannot say, that my opinion about particular songs has changed over the years. True is, that my opinion about albums has changed. The most remarkable change is, that I appreciate Wind And Wuthering and Duke higher, than in the days, I got to know them. W & W moved to my top five and Duke from down low to the upper middle field.

Wind and Wuthering and Duke happen to be my favorite albums (after The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway).

there are a few genesis songs that, when i first listened to them -many years ago-, i was like "what the hell is this??", but now i love them.

one for the vine
duchess
heathaze
evidence of automn
me and sarah jane
keep it dark
dodo / lurker

note that all of them were fully or mostly written by tony. his songs are hard to get into at first, but you end up loving them.

I seem to be the odd one out here, my preferences are very consistent, just that everything kept growing on me over the years. The only song I can think of is, as I mentioned before elsewhere, The Knife because it is so out of place on Trespass and it took me to hear it on The Platinum Collection to appreciate it.

Songs that were in the background for me until for some reason they just exploded into my consciousness & I was on the path, after so many years, to becoming a real Genesis fan:

That's All
Home By The Sea
Mama

and then once I started listening with new ears, the Duke album which I hadn't really liked before. There were no Genesis songs I disliked. I suppose Dodo/Lurker is a song which has made a big impression on me in the last year. Another would be Entangled.

It took me a while to warm up to most of the Gabriel-era albums. I suppose the most dramatic dislike-to-like transitions occurred with these songs:

Where the Sour Turns to Sweet
The Serpent
Stagnation
Dusk

With later material, my reactions have been more consistent. Some of the ATTWT songs took some time to warm up to, though, especially:

Down and Out
Undertow
The Lady Lies

I don't think I have any examples of liking songs less over time.

Interesting question. Back in my teens (70s/80s) I'd listen uncritically to pretty much anything by Genesis. From that time, there's quite a bit of that stuff I probably won't listen to ever again. Not necessarily because I now think it's rubbish, but more that it doesn't seem to fit with my listening habits. Such as: One for the Vine, The Lady Lies, Robbery Assault & Battery, Get 'Em Out By Friday, Battle of Epping Forest. And quite a few others.

At a push I might listen to the instrumental bit of the live version of Vine as it has such a good feel. If I could tidily clip 'The Reverend' section from Epping Forest it could make a nice standalone track on a compilation. But stuff like Robbery and Mouse's Night now sound too twee for my tastes. And when at a Hackett gig last year they launched into Get Em Out, my heart sank. It was a real slog to get through. But when I was 14, I loved it.

In time I came to apppreciate stuff like Keep it Dark and I must say I surrended to the simple charm of Follow you Follow me, hard to say as far as the latter is concerned whether it is a case of changing musical taste ot it just brings me back to those times, an exercise in nostalgia. I used to love Your own special way, I was probaby infatuated with some girl, now I skip it. I used to skip Hackett's intrumentals on W&W now I absolutely love them. Then again some things haven't changed at all, I was bowled over by Mama and HbtS, still love them, I could never really stomach stuff like IT, I can't dance and Abacab, still can't.

I like Who Dunnit & always will.

It's Duchess that I'm not so sure about at the moment. Great chorus but the rest of it.... not so much.

I was confused the first time I heard it. After that, I just hated it. I started skipping it after my second or third listen of Abacab.
