Miscellaneous Genesis trivia that you've probably never thought about...

- The majority of released Genesis songs featuring John Mayhew do not appear on TRESPASS.

- The majority of released Genesis songs featuring Ant Phillips do not appear on either FGTR (the original, without bonus tracks) or TRESPASS.

- The Genesis song with the longest instrumental introduction is "Duke's Travels"; the vocals do not come in until 6:10. It's also the only Genesis song to quote another Genesis song's lyrics in full (with one phrase added).

Feel free to add your own!

it's a halfway instrumental track, a bit like police's voices inside my head.

i'm adding my contribution:

the lyrics to i know what i like and i can't dance contain the words "the way i walk". also, a variation of that phrase -"the way we walk"- was the name of the 1992's genesis tour.

the lead singles from four albums in a row had at least their lyrics written by mike:
- your own special way (credited solely to mike) from 'wind and wuthering'.
- follow you, follow me from 'and then there were three'.
- turn it on again from 'duke'.
- abacab from 'abacab'.

Right, like "Second Home by the Sea." Maybe "longest instrumental introduction" isn't the best terminology, but I didn't know what other description to use.

That's what's cool about the use of the phrase "The Way We Walk" for the 1992 tour (and live albums): In being a reference to both those songs at once, it nicely linked the two major Genesis eras.

And I've always liked that IKWIL appears on The Longs and "I Can't Dance" on The Shorts, so the phrase is represented on both albums. cheesy

Was it you or was it me? Or was it he or she?

NB: despite what my name may suggest, I was not born in 1972 tongue

Don't know if this has been mentioned before:

FOXTROT is the only Genesis studio album where Phil is in the band but doesn't sing at least a partial lead vocal.

A couple of questions rather than trivia as such. I'm relying on people who know more than I do!

I read that when Carpet Crawlers 1999 was recorded, Ray Wilson was lined up to sing a verse, but this idea was dropped. Is this true?

Does anyone know what was played when the band reunited to perform at PG's wedding in 2002?

Also I just posted something in the historic tours forum, that on the 1982 tour there was a performance of Horizons in Canada, according to Setlist FM. I don't believe this, but does anyone know better?

In regards to Trespass, I thought Mayhew and Phillips appear on all tracks?! If not then who else is playing drums and lead guitar?

Mayhew and Phillips do appear on all tracks on TRESPASS.

What I'm saying is that more Genesis tracks featuring Mayhew have been released outside of the TRESPASS album than on the album itself.

I'm also saying that more Genesis tracks featuring Phillips have been released outside of TRESPASS and the original FGTR than on those albums themselves.

Is that any clearer?

I'm sure other people here will know more about this but I'll try my best to give some answers:

- Regarding Carpet Crawlers 1999, there's two possible answers, I'm not sure which one is right: a) it was the record company's idea to have all three Genesis singers sing a verse each but the band members never considered including Ray in the first place; b) the song was already recorded before Ray became the new singer.

- No idea about Peter's wedding but I know of some obscure unplugged version of 'I Can't Dance' from 2000 featuring Phil, Tony and Mike; this must have been for some special occasion.

- From all we know, 'Horizons' was only performed on the Selling England tour, later on Steve kept performing it on his solo shows. In 1982 Steve was no longer in the band; on that famous Milton Keynes reunion concert he was late and made it only to the last two songs which were The Knife and I Know What I Like. I'd be very surprised if Daryl ever played that song, I don't think he ever did.

But as I said, I'm not much help with these questions...

That seems to be the correct answer.

Besides the Genesis lead singers (Peter, Phil, Ray), only one Genesis member has released an album where he actually sings all the songs -- i.e., no instrumentals.

...Mike!

I thought about that one. It comes very close, but the brief unlisted track ("Hunt Link") after the title track is instrumental. On the CD it's included in the same track (in keeping with its unlisted status), but on the LP it was clearly a separate track.
