« Thread started on: Sep 29th, 2011, 06:43am »

I remember reading back on the old forum that Genesis had originally thought of linking Dodo/lurker with Naminanu & Submarine. Does anyone know the order of the songs that was intended. I read on Wikipedia that the order was to be:
1. Namainanu
2. Dodo/Lurker
3. Submarine

However, I am not sure of this. Can anyone confirm?

My Idea of this always was :

Dodo is a song about the war

Lurker is the another part, but there is this One important part :

"need no wings to fly... Who am I" or something like that, and guess whats that ?

A Submarine smiley

So Dodo/Lurker/Submarine is pretty sure, and what comes last, I think you know it smiley

Here Ive found some facts about this song smiley

It was origionally Dodo / Lurker / Submarine / Naminanu, as stated by the band and in the original recording featured on the "Abacab Complete" bootleg.

i don't think the band has ever said anything official on the subject, except i think tony might have said submarine was the answer to the riddle in "lurker". but they definitely haven't said anything to affirm an "abacab suite" as they did to affirm the "duke suite". on the abacab complete bootleg, the songs aren't exactly performed together, they're faded together in the order clucker mentioned, and the versions of the tracks are nearly identical to the album versions. it's hardly a "medley" or "suite". what order they go in, or if they were even meant to go together at all, is all just fan speculation. of note, naminanu is actually a "lite" version of dodo— the notes to the main chorus of both are the same.

if opinions are like a-holes, you know i've got to have one too. my opinion is that at an early stage they might have been linked together in one instrumental song, but as the writing progressed, dodo and submarine split into two different songs, and dodo then split into dodo and naminanu, with one band member going for the harder approach as seen in "dodo" on the album, and another band member going for a lighter version such as in "naminanu". the band decided to pursue the dodo avenue more, and the other two tracks were put to the side in favour of completing dodo and lurker. when the recording sessions were ending, they probably recorded down naminanu and submarine as far as they developed them, and eventually released them as b-sides.

OK, I can't picture this (just as I couldn't picture "Wot Gorilla?" having the same melody as part of "One For The Vine" until it was pointed out to me).

What are words in "Dodo" that are sung to the "Naminanu" melody?

It would have been interesting to have heard this "suite". As "standalone" tracks, I like Submarine but am not so keen on Naminanu.

I believe he's actually talking about the opening keyboard fanfare on "Dodo" matching up with the similar sounding keyboard fanfare in the 'choruses' (as it were) of "Naminanu." The ideas are definitely similar (same rhythm, open fifths - a step apart on "Dodo", a minor 3rd apart on "Naminanu"), hadn't actually noticed that similarity before.

Each branch of the suite seems to have spun off enough into their own soundworlds to have warranted sectioning off as separate recordings, but they certainly feel like off-shoots of the same "bits" emerging during a particular Abacab writing session. It would've been interesting if they had decided to emphasize the lineage more in the mooted double-album planning stage of the album. As it is, Submarine and Naminanu feel most akin to some of the instrumental interludes on The Lamb to me.

I love this topic grin Yes, the drums at the end of Lurker match the drums of Submarine, which means you can create a great link from Lurker to Submarine without too much effort, and it just sounds like they've played it continuously.

I made my own take on the medley on Audacity (though I don't see why anyone else should agree with it!) with Naminanu going straight into Dodo (I cut one of the bits that links the "naminanu" sections to the instrumental "chorus" as it's been called here and pasted it onto the end of Naminanu so that it can flow straight into the opening bit of Dodo). Lurker goes straight into Submarine, and during the fade out I stuck the beginning of Naminanu again which then goes straight into the last 30 seconds of Naminanu, which runs to the end. I like it anyway laugh

1. Naminanu 3:49
2. Dodo 5:09
3. Lurker 2:16
4. Submarine 4:12
5. Naminanu (Reprise) 0:50

I like Naminanu more than Submarine but I can't picture either as anything but a throwaway B-side.

I used to own a bootleg that linked it in the intended order.

I wasn't quite sure what to think of it. I like Abacab the way it is.

Abacab complete — second edition. it's a bootleg which consists of studio versions of the abacab sessions that are slightly different than the originals, but they are really so close that it is hard to tell at times. it is the source of the "medley" that everyone's talking about, but it isn't really a medley on abacab complete, the tracks are just crossfaded together.

Well the Transition from Lurker to Submarine is pretty great, also because of the riddle... The Transition to Naminanu is bad, because there is NO transition between these songs ...

However, I think I will try Merryman72's Version to build it myself . Or do you want to share your Version with us ? cheesy
