Can anyone tell me the story behind Silent Running also being called "On Dangerous Ground?" I don't think it's part of the lyrics. Was that the working title perhaps?

The song was used in a film called "On Dangerous Ground"!

Yep! And the song was written before the film, but the film people heard it and wanted it, so they added the parenthetical part (hence why it's not in the lyrics).

Am I wrong or do the lyrics make no sense at all? I think Mike said something like that.

In the context of the film, or in general? I think they make sense in general, but I've never seen the film.

Okay, guys, I am only paraphrasing here because I can't remember the specifics. But according to my memory, the idea behind the song is science fiction in nature. About an astronaut who travels far into the universe and then through some anomaly, is able to see the future of planet Earth and the destruction that awaits it. The lyrics then are about one man's desperate attempts to send a an urgent message through space and time to his loved ones before it is too late. The song kind of makes sense when you know the back story but otherwise it really doesn't scan at all. For years I was completely baffled by it until I read an interview somewhere.

The working title of the song was called Silent Running because either the mood or the lyric idea of the song reminded Mike Rutherford of a movie by the same name, but has nothing to do with the movie On Dangerous Ground, which the film was actually linked to.

grin Thank goodness they didn't use the US title of the film, Silent Running (Choke Canyon) would have caused even more confusion.

I just wikipedia'd a film called Silent Running, which I saw years ago, and sure enough, it was the inspiration for the song title. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Running

Good film, and possibly the inspiration for the Korgis song, Silent running, too:

"Futuristic landscape
Futuristic skies
No birds or vegetation
Earth remains despised

They scar and they maim and they mutilate
They do it in the name of freedom
Their madness no description can encapsulate
Earth's a floating mausoleum

Silent Running
Silent Running
Silent Running
Silent Running

Believe in Nostradamus
Believe in what you will
Tell me that it had to be
Prophecy fulfilled

I cherish those who perish in the holy war
To save the planet from extinction
Tell me, what will survivors be surviving for
When survival be the one distinction

Silent Running
Silent Running
Silent Running
Silent Running

Futuristic landscape
Futuristic skies
No birds or vegetation
Earth remains despised

They scar and they maim and they mutilate
They do it in the name of freedom
Their madness no description can encapsulate
Earth's a floating mausoleum
Silent Running
Silent Running
Silent Running
Silent Running"
