...all the joy out of the original. (in the poster's opinion).

Inspired by today's Tony Blackburn "Pick of the pops" where he played:

Move over darling - Tracy Ullman - Doris Day's original was flawless, a wonderful voice and marvellous phrasing, she could have seduced the coldest heart. Tracy just sounds like a 14 year old chav at a bus stop!

It Must be love - Labi Siffre - great song from a great songwriter, performed with panache. Then there's Madness............. sad

Others worth noting:

Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini - It's hard to see how anyone could make this any worse, but Bombalurina (Tommy Mallett and Andrew Lloyd Webber huh) managed it with ease!

Nights in white satin - the Moody Blues - you might think I'm gonna have a go at the Dickies version, but at least it was tongue in cheek, as was their Banana Splits song cover. No, the one I'm going to go for (and there are literally dozens) is Elkie Brooks. Oh dear!

In my opinion, mainly,it's always the first version you hear that you prefer, but there are exceptions

With a little help from my friends – Joe Cocker turned Ringo’s quirky little number into an overlong, overblown drag rolleyes
Walk This Way - Girls Aloud’s feeble version of the Aerosmith song

It's pains me to cite one of my musical heroes, but...
Peter Gabriel's version of "Heroes"
and Gabriel's take on "The Boy In The Bubble"

The original versions had vitality, and a manic sense of urgency to them.
Gabriel's delivery is slow and methodical and there is just no adrenaline flow resulting from either of these arrangements.

Gary Jules's extremely popular but downright embarrassing cover of Mad World by Tears For Fears. angry

Also, the forgettable, toothless cover of the Buzzcocks classic Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn'tve?) by Fine Young Cannibals.

You’re absolutely right there, alas!

Quite a lot of his covers seem to misfire. I’m no fan of Radiohead but I sympathise with their rumoured dislike of his cover of “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” which similarly kills the spark of their original.

Several of the songs on this.....

Alice Cooper sings "Eleanor Rigby".... yeah, take one of the greatest, most poignant songs of all time and suck every drop of emotion right out of it. Awful.

And then there's the cover of "Things We Said Today." Let me just say that Bob Dylan should never ever sing another thing. Ever. sad

I just noticed this topic & I actually thought Cooper's version of Eleanor Rigby, a song I worship, was pretty good. I agree about Dylan & Things We Said Today. The other track on that album I didn't like was Smokey Robinson's So Bad. I never liked the man's voice, no matter how great critics say he is.

My least favourite covers are of Guns'n'Roses doing Knocking On Heaven's Door & Live & Let Die. Sacrilege.

I could just stick with One Direction cover versions and make a list, particularly their versions of One Way or Another, Heroes, and Your Song.

It's generally the manufactured pop stars that tend to do the worst jobs on wonderful songs. Britney Spears doing Satisfaction and I Love Rock and Roll is another example that comes quickly to mind.

And I hate their version of Sound of Silence. Murder of a great song.
