thumbdown Modern cinema is a joke!
« Thread started on: May 28th, 2017, 3:56pm »

Does anyone else here agree that cinema over the last few years has become almost entirely unexciting and shamelessly desperate?

With movies these days there's so few truly great and clever new ideas. The vast majority of new films are pointless sequels, even more pointless prequels to movies that weren't even good, superhero movies (which are stupidly common these days to the point where I just roll my eyes when they advertise them), adaptations of old television shows, pointless remakes, pointless spin-offs and the worst of the worst: adaptations of pop cultural things that just cannot effectively translate into movies, like video games, children's toys and, more recently, emojis.

Emojis.

It's become so bad that as soon as a movie does slightly well, there's immediately a sequel in the works. In fact these days Hollywood plans out entire cinematic universes with loads of chapters. They'll revive a once-iconic character (most often a superhero) and they'll make a main movie, a couple of sequels, a prequel origin story, a spin-off featuring a different character from the original movie, then a crossover with another franchise, a sequel to the crossover and so on.

And it never ends. It's turned into such a mess and it makes it hard to get excited for movies in general. And thanks to Netflix's never-ending domination of visual entertainment, movies are turning into TV shows. Several movies now are just extra-long "episodes" with an ending that blatantly suggests that more will follow, too many plot points to keep track of, and slowly-developed side characters that you just know will eventually get their own spin-off movies. This largely worked for Star Wars (which actually is also suffering from having way too many movies; I mean do we really need a Boba Fett movie?) but not every movie series needs to be like Star Wars.

I know this post may come across as a bitter rant but I'm just fed up and I was wondering if anyone else agreed. It's the same formula over and over, and they all rely heavily on ultra-expensive, shiny and obviously fake CG effects that look no different from the ones used in the last movie.

Disagree entirely, there are plenty of good independent movies out there. You just have to look for them.

I never said that all of today's movies are bad; just the vast majority of the mainstream ones. The independent movies are indeed much better and often very unique. They feel like proper movies, not overextended television series episodes.

Almost all of the mainstream movies though are just plain lousy to me. Take Rogue One for example. I know a lot of people liked this movie, but for me I was ticking items on a checklist while watching it. Overdone CG effects, overly gritty BBC drama tone to make it look more "adult", a main character with no real personality apart from "I've had a tough life but I'm not going to give up", oodles of retro references to past Star Wars movies, etc. There was hardly anything that was weird and wonderful in it, instead just the same stuff you'd find in any modern CG action adventure film.

One of the things I've noticed more in movies is the blood and guts... You never had this before 2000? A bloke shoots someone, you see blood and guts or a guy chops a hand off. You see everything.

The early days you had this in the music with the guy just lying on the floor without the dramatic effect of the killing. You know he's dead!.... Why all this graphic detail?

I do agree with NSOV on the movie structure, maybe it's hollywood promoting something without ant new ideas.

Although I do agree that there have been more than a few very bad mainstream movies over the past few years, good mainstream movies have been made as well. I'll give some good examples (in my opinion) of this from recent years that I've seen. I'll leave the Star Wars and superhero movies out regardless of what I thought of them.

The Accountant, Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival, Ex Machina, The Martian, Bridge of Spies, The Revenant, Whiplash, Fury, Interstellar, The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, Mud, Captain Phillips.

Of course, there are some good movies, but the original post does make a good point. One, in fact, that occurred to me the other day on seeing an advert on a bus stop shelter for the new "Baywatch" movie, a spin off from a TV series that struggled to come up with enough plots to fill series one of the TV show! wink

Who needed a plot, when you had blonde women in red swimsuits running in slow motion?

Just seen the latest Pirates of the Caribbean sequel (Salazar’s Revenge) in which no dead horse was left unflogged. All the same set pieces, jokes, “plots” & all the stars from the earlier films reprising their roles, apart from Penelope Cruz who sent her husband.

I wouldn’t call it bad, just woefully repetitive. To be fair the action sequences look quite impressive on the big screen, but after 5(?) films’ worth of diminishing returns the Pirates franchise is going nowhere new or interesting, & will doubtless continue to go nowhere in circles for the next few installments!

What? Have you seen Soldier Blue, The Wild Bunch, The Evil Dead, Saving Private Ryan and Platoon to name but a few?
