Honestly, what an absolute embarrassment for Hollywood! shocked A not only disheartening but truly humiliating experience for the cast and crew of La La Land. Whoever allowed this debacle to unfold should be ashamed. undecided

I thought they handled it well. Very dignified. Mistakes happen. I'm sure everyone has moved on

There are a lot of news reports that say it was actually handled quite badly; some suggest that the mistake could have been easily avoided, and that the response to the mistake wasn't quick enough.

Also, I feel sorry for the cast of Moonlight. Must have felt very awkward to do their speeches after snatching the award from the "winners".

It was a little awkward I suppose, but not really a big deal, to be honest. Things got straightened out relatively quickly (it's not like they went home with the award and were told about the mistake the next day). By now they're all probably having a good laugh about it, except for the person responsible for the goof up, of course. grin

How so? How much more quicker could it have been handled?

The news will say anything if they think it will make the story a little more juicier.

It was an unexpected mistake (and not the first time it's happened).

"Sorry, folks, but this envelope is for the wrong category." (audience laughs)

Instead, he stares at it, he hands it to the woman and she just blurts out "La La Land"!

The fact that they both failed to notice that the sheet inside it read "Emma Stone" next to the film's title is a conundrum. And I am aware that it was just a mistake, it was just such a foolish one.

I agree with you. Turns out the guy who has been in charge of the Oscar envelopes for the last 20 years was not invited to participate in this year's event. They obviously did it on the cheap, and this is what they get. I haven't seen Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty together since they were Bonnie and Clyde in 1967. They were shot to death in the movie. At least this time they only shot themselves in the foot.

Denzil Washington looked a bit out of shape and slightly bemused.. He was not very polite with the public guests that appeared from the bus. Thought the whole affair went OK despite a hick-up at the end. To be honest, thought it added amusement to the whole affair!.. wink

According to the report on the BBC I heard the following morning, the accountant firm ( huh) Price Waterhouse Cooper were responsible.

I guess if you call your film "la la land", you are setting yourself up for a "moment"! grin

For an organiser of/participant in that event, it's a big deal; for most of the rest of us, nothing major. I agree that media will do all they can to make it a bigger story than it is for dramatic effect.

I was really hoping Arrival would win a few more. I like LLL a lot, but found Arrival very affecting and thoughtful. Right now, it feels to me that a film about understanding and communication without the use of threats is very relevant. Plus it's so well-made and has an outstanding and beautifully understated lead performance from Amy Adams; for me, the screen performance of 2016.

Still, at least they were only shot in the foot metaphorically, unlike the 2 unfortunates who were literally shot in the foot during the French Presidentís speech today.

Frankly, I'm pissed that Star Trek Beyond didn't win the award for Best Make-up.

Easy decision and judgement to make in hindsight, from the comfort of home.

Quite a different set of circumstances standing in front of a large, live audience and needing to figure out how to deal with a completely unexpected and confusing situation.

Beatty obviously was hesitating, not sure what to do or say. Faye Dunaway had no idea that there was any issue. She seemed to think he was just goofing around. I'm guessing that Beatty showed the card to Dunaway to share his confusion, but she just saw "La La Land" printed on the card and made the announcement.

The presenters cannot be blamed for the result of a mistake that was neither their responsibility nor something that was outside of their expectations.
