Been on something of an Ant kick the last few days... most recently I heard "Tibetan Yak Music" from PP&P.

I'm still eagerly awaiting the remasters!

Anthology again (still!! grin) I really, really love this album.

If anyone doesn't know much about Ant's solo work - I would definitely recommend this as a starting point as it's kind of a 'taster' of his work from earlier albums.

Some absolutely stunning pieces on here!

That's my favourite track from PP&P.
I don't know why. It's so delicate yet I find it so stirring. I hang on to its every note. I think of it almost as a love song to a 12-string. Ant seems to have such an innate understanding of that instrument and I think this track really reflects that.

Playing Slow Dance right now.
Lot of fans seem to really like this one, I've seen some rank it as their favourite.
I'm a bit hot and cold with this one, to be honest - there are moments on it I like and others that just sort of wash over me.

I think one of my fav tracks has to be Lights on The Hill from PP&P IV - A Catch at The Table (and Anthology!). Although it would be very hard to pick an actual fav track.

Today I have been listening to Anthology (just for a change!) and Tarka grin

I have always loved the PPP IV "A Catch at the Tables" track "Lights on the Hill" - especially the last minute or so of it as it plays out. I once dubbed that last minute on to tape back to back 45 times to fill a 45 min side - what a wonderful extended mood piece to sink into and to daydream during. Beautiful. But the whole album's good, ditto "New England", probably my favourite PPP album.

Looks like your in for a heap of listening pleasure Rosie. Enjoy!

Lights on the hill is one of my very favourite tracks.

Have just finished listening to PP&P VII (Slow Waves, Soft Stars) - stunning.

Am now listening to PP&P IX (Dragonfly Dreams) - don;t know what else I can say that I haven't said about the others - it's beautiful.

Not sure (yet) which I'd choose as my favourite though, probably dependant upon my mood for guitar or piano at the time I guess !

Interesting to read such high praise for that album.
I don't have that one and I've always been a bit hesitant about getting it.
I generally favour his albums featuring a lot of acoustic and 12-string anyway.
And I think it's the prospect of a "modernistic" sounding album with synthesizers and drum machines is what's scaring me off.

But it's currently being remastered along with two others that I plan to get. Depending on how I feel when the remasters are out, I might give this one a chance and get it too.

Today played another of my faves:

The Geese And The Ghost.

I doubt I will bother getting the remasters of this or 1984 as the copies I have are both the Virgin remasters, and they both sound really good as it is.
My copy of TGATG has 'Master Of Time' as a bonus track, and I find that highly enjoyable too.
However, I do want to get 'Wise After The Event' when the remaster appears.
I only have that on vinyl, and haven't heard it since about 1980!
It's my other fave album by Ant, along with the two mentioned above. cheesy

Yeah, but remember, the re-releases are coming out as double discs so expect extras. I will be updating my copies of the classic first 3 albums as even though they were remastered, they are not that great and you only have to look and hear what Nick Davies did with the recent remaster of Trick and Wind from the Genesis back catalogue.

Hmm - I don;t know about 'similar' exactly - but Sail the World and Wildlife are both fabulous instrumentals - but then I am WAY too biased where the lovely Mr Phillips is concerned, I find all his music so incredibly pleasurable to listen to.

My recommendation for 'newbies' to Ant's stuff is Anthology - it is a great 'taster' of all his work I think!

I am far too biased - but I think all his work is brilliant - helps that I like a wide range of musical styles too I guess !! kiss

Hi everyone! I am new to this forum. Of all of the members of Genesis I love Ant's music the most. I remember the first Ant album I bought was "Private Parts And Pieces I". I took the record home and after listening to it I decided that Anthony Phillips was a sadly underexposed genius. I'm sorry for writing that here but I thought that some of you might appreciate a little background on my discovery of Ant's music.

I listen to Ant's music the most while walking. I walk about 4 miles a day and I listen to Ant's music on shuffle mode. In the Winter i tend to listen to "Antiques" and "Twelve" a lot. Those two albums evoke the thought of icy Winter days for me.

Thanks for the warm welcome Rosie. Indeed I find it frustrating that a composer and musician of the calibre of Anthony Phillips has had such a hard time over the years getting his music heard with all of the record label problems and issues he has dealt with. A truly superb artist!!!!!!

Now this is a harder one to advise. I have most of Ant's albums and I love them all - BUT some of them I have had to grow to love, they have not been an instant 'hit' but I would always advise giving them more time if you are unsure at first hearing.
Slow Dance is my all time favourite album. but I love Tarka, TG&TG, Wise and Sides very much too.
I think you can't go too far wrong with trying Geese or Wise next and maybe even Archive I or II

I've listened to this several times now and I find that, no matter how busy I am, the acoustic guitar (especially in Tregenna Afternoons) makes me stop and really listen, without me even realising it. Does that make sense?

Had Slow Dance on last night on MP3 player and still stunning. smiley

A very underated song for me is the haunting "She'll Be Waiting" from Dragonfly Dreams, my fav Ant CD.

Best wishes.

John.

Both excellent choices John smiley
and I agree about She'll be Waiting being underated - it is lovely!

Well, I finally went and purchased Wise After The Event, the two disc remastered version. Believe it or not, it's been over 30 years since I last heard this.
The bonus disc is interesting, if not essential, but the real gem is the album itself. I forgot just how Genesis-like it is in parts. Also, it reminded me what a good electric guitarist Ant was. I really wish he would take up the electric again these days, as much as I love his acoustic work.
Tracks like Birdsong and Pulling Faces have some great little solos in them, reminiscent of his time with Genesis, and also reminiscent of a certain Mr Hackett. No wonder Steve was the obvious replacement for Ant. They really can sound astonishingly similar at times.
I think this album is going to be given a right battering over the coming days. wink

Part of Missing Links 1
New England suite
The Geese & The Ghost 1 & 2
Spring Meeting
Whippersnapper
Eduardo/The Sea and the Armadillo

Now Runaway horses
After this one Lifer, Parlour Suite River of life and White Spider

as it is finals time i am drawn to more instrumental music to help me focus on studying so ant fills in nicely. flamingo has really caught me this time through itis absolutely wonderful in fact that whole second side is some of the greatest music in my collection i feel. and magdalene (i know its not instrumental but hey i gotta take a few singing breaks right) really gets me going great stuff.

Yesterday (Christmas Day) I listened to the remastered Wise After The Event and 1984.

Slow Dance and 1984 always make me think of Christmas anyway, in a nice way.

Hopefully it'll be the new Missing Links today for me!

1984 disc 2 - and then my mum flounced off to bed because the Rule Brittannia sequence on my headphones was drowning out all the misery on Coronation Street. angry

Which would you rather have - a melodramatic missing child storyline or Ant's soundtrack to a programme that I missed probably due to yet another soap or bonnets and bustles serial?

There's only one way to find out....

... only now listening to Geese and the Ghost in full having never before owned it and I feel such a fool, what was holding me back all these years? That album would bring a tear to a glass eye, I will never criticise Phil again. I love the fact John Hackett played flute on it as well.

For those of you who know more of Ant's albums, can you direct me to any that are similarl to this - beautiful, melancholy and timeless.

ta, Brian.

I'm possibly the worst person to ask as I love all his music so much. I would suggest maybe dipping into the private parts catalogue - they are all gorgeous, but maybe start with 1 & 2.
Then ...... get Anthology which is a great 'taster' of a lot of his varied work.
Have fun on your Ant Phillips journey of discovery !!!! kiss

Dragonfly Dreams has become my "morning before going to work" CD. It is a ritual now I play it every morning before I leave for work. Which means right now I stay away from it because I'm on vacation grin

Recently on rotation were Geese and The Ghost, New England and Pathways & Promenades. Love them all smiley
