Why does Peter Gabriel take so long to release anything? It's kind of infuriating.

Let's all use this thread to complain about how much we want something new and not another set of reissues.

The reason would be that if he releases a studio album with new material, he would after that have to reunite with Genesis! Yes, a new studio album is connected to such a reunion! That's what he said at the band meeting in 2005, that he wants his new album finished before the reunion!

Oh yeah, just joking. But he must have a very serious writer's block.

Not trying to be mean but he is a millionaire and he is not the youngest man on earth any more, there's no pressure for him to rush out any new material.

My guess is that he is somewhat of a perfectionist and also has no particular pressure from a label or management to get a new album out.

I'd love to hear whatever backlog of new songs has accumulated since Up. I'd also love to see some more archival material released, particularly an expanded Plays Live with all the tracks recorded from that tour.

As a major solo PG fan who always enjoyed seeing what new stuff he came up with, over the years I've felt a lot of frustration about the lack of new material, but while still disappointed have now more or less resigned myself to there very probably never being another new album of original material.

The frustration was exacerbated by, as mentioned above, PG saying he wanted to do his "new album" as a priority when the 2005 meeting took place. All we ended up getting was a retrospective tour! I daresay there's truth in what's been said above, that he feels under no great pressure to get a new album out. What further adds in to the frustration though is that at one point there was even a title for the next album, "I/O" which suggested it was near completion. There was talk about the stockpile of new material he'd built up. And at one point I'm sure I recall talk of another project, an album/tour of stripped-down new stuff with just PG, Jed Lynch and Danny Thompson.

I wondered if he had writer's block quite badly but if there really was a stockpile of new stuff, that can't be the case. He's been quite busy, but with covers and revisiting his own old material. The few nuggets of new stuff we've had I've mostly liked, especially Why Don't You Show Yourself.

In March 2016 I saw him give a talk in London and be interviewed by the writer/philosopher Alain de Botton. When, inevitably, he was asked about when the next album would be out, he again referred to the stockpile and said "I'll cautiously suggest September..." (frisson of anticipation among audience) "...but I'm not saying which year!"

It has been a long wait since the last album of original material, sure. I/0 was promised within 18 months of Up as I recall, but vanished a long time ago.

I have no idea when PG will issue a new album but I somehow think we will get one at some point.

September has been and gone so I guess we are at least 11 months away from it appearing.

Then again compared to Genesis, he has been rather prolific of late. wink

It has been somewhat the same with Roger Waters. His Amused To Death was released in 1992 and at least since the end of the 90s he talked about new songs for a new album. But then the years went on, and every now and then there were news that he was working on the songs, and rearranging them, making them up to date and so on. I was very surprised when the album was actually released earlier this year. Judging from his age (74) it will most probably be his last studio album. I guess the same goes for Peter Gabriel: a new album will surface at some time during the next ten years, but it will most probably his last studio album.

I recall it took about 10 years for him to completely finish Up. It has been about that since he first talked about working on this new album IIRC, about the time when he met w/Genesis back in 2006 I think it was. At any rate, his albums are always worth waiting for. When Up was released, that was the only thing I listened to for about 3 months straight.

I just hope he doesn't deviate and decide to do some other project first. We got that with the scratch my back releases, New Blood, Big Blue Ball, and all the subsequent tours those required, and the recent Rock Paper Scissors tour! And everytime he announced some new thing he was doing, I was like "great, now his new album will be pushed back at least ANOTHER two years!"

What really makes me crazy is knowing he has those songs just sitting there, some finished some not presumably, but we just haven't heard them yet! Well, I'm not sure what all else he can get into now-and he has been pretty open these last couple years with updating us on his progress on working on it, so hopefully that means we'll see something soon. Not next year, as I imagine we would've heard something about it by now...2019?

Well if there were 98 different versions of 'In your eyes' it could be a while!
