Memories of '82
« Thread started on: Jun 10th, 2011, 05:50am » |

Hi there
Reading some of the other acocunts here made me think of a few of my own from 1982. Beginning with the field of crosses during Apocalypse in 9/8 at Hamburg where everyone seemed to be holding up their concert posters to ward off evil - spooky!
Phil asking everyine to move back at Deeside because the poor people at the front were getting their nipples crushed "and I known it's highly erotic" as he said.
Watching a girl in white stilettos dancing in front of me during John Martyn's set at Milton Keynes - how shoe did it I will never know! That and the entire performance at Milton Keynes from the white coffin onwards - goodness, was it really 29 years ago?!
Anyone else with memories of that tour?

Ah yes Alan
82 was a special year, Brussels Vorst nationale, probably the best G gig i have ever been to, i managed to avoid finding out the setlist beforehand, and what a surpise the set was! brilliant arena, what a fantastic night, that night got on the ferry from Antwerp back to Dover and the G trucks were on it! ready for the UK tour, i then saw them at Hammersmith 3 times then the MK bowl Those were the days!

Hi again, Alan
Oh yes, they were the days indeed! Dear old MGP have a lot to answer for. So many good memories of those shows and the fans involved. I wonder if any of them are on this forum...

Hi Alan I did a few MGP tours over the years.
Genesis Cologne 1981 Gabriel Torhout 1983 Collins Dusseldorf 1985 Genesis NYC 1986 Genesis/Gabriel Paris 1987
All were memorable trips with superb shows and great company. I'm still in touch with two guys I met on the New York trip in 1986.
For those who don't know what the hell we're talking about I'll explain. Mead Gould Promotions were a company that ran trips to see gigs around the world from the UK. Trips included all transport (flights/coaches) accommodation and concert tickets.

Hi there
I did the Tourhout '83 and Gabriel/Genesis trips in '87 myself. had a great time - especially annoying the French fans by singing Here Comes The Flood in German! Also did Hamburg 82 hence this thread as well as a few other gigs by other bands including the amazing Queen gig in Paris in 86 where Marillion blew them off stage! Aah, the memories!

Somewhere in my dark dank (ok thats getting carried away) Archives I do have a news clipping from either NME or MM or even Sounds where MGP are interviewed during the Genesis 82 tour!
If I can find it I will do what I can to post it on here, but I got the impression the journalist was a bit of an arse!

I only saw three shows in 82 but remember weighing up whether or not to go to the Vorst National gig on the MGP trip as I knew it was a real Genesis hot spot. I'd been to Leiden the year before with MGP - not such a Genesis hot spot
Anyway, I saw them at Hammersmith, the NEC and, of course, Milton Keynes.
It was weird how I got the Hammersmith tickets. I read about the gigs in the Evening Standard (London Paper) and that they were having an initial sale of tickets that day to "genuine" fans at Hammersmith Palais (for some strange reason). So, I legged it straight up to The Palais and was challenged at the door wit the following question - "Who was the original guitarist in Genesis?". When I gave the correct answer, I was allowed to buy two tickets which happened to be in the 7th row
What a great set-list!!!

And people call me a sad git! Seriously though, MGP brought a lot of fans together at these events and the memories will last a lifetime even if the t shirts don't!

Saw them 8 times on that tour I thought it was 10 but i can only find tickets for 8
Belgium Vorst National - 16/9/82 (MGP trip) Birmingham - 20/9/82 Birmingham - 21/9/82 The Marquee Club London - 27/9/82 London Hammersmith Odeon - 28/9/82 London Hammersmith Odeon - 29/9/82 London Hammersmith Odeon - 30/9/82 Milton Keynes - 2/10/82
Did the MGP trip to Paris in 1987 also.
Don't know how i managed to do all those gigs in 1982, seeing as i was a poor student nurse at the time
I think it was definitely a case of ..... "It's Genesis, nothing comes before Genesis"

Hi there
So you're another one who might have been on our coach to Paris in '87 eh? I think we should try and organise a reunion for those of us who participated in MGP trips. What do you think?

I was on that trip as well - the only indoor concert on the IT European tour. I got right down the front at the Bercy Arena.
I remember "Walk Like An Egyptian" on the PA before the concert and everyone singing and whistling.
Also, bumped into Tony Banks in Notre Dam on the afternoon of the gig - along with several dozen other Genesis fans. I got my (lovely) ticket autographed (as mentioned in another thread somewhere). Poor Tony just wanted to be out for a quiet walk taking photos
Fabulous concert though.......
.......then afterwards, some wally on the trip was moaning that there "wasn't any 12-string guitar"

An impressive list Nikki
What are your memories of the Brussels trip?

Ditto - I'm sure that I remember you there with your Mum (is that right?).

I know - how did we afford it? I'm convinced that tickets were cheaper in real terms back then.
These days £75 or £100 for tickets just puts me right off.

Definitely!!

Hi there
Tickets were definitely cheaper back then. Even as a "penniless" student I was able to go to the following gigs on the '82 tour...
Hamburg Birmingham (both nights) Deeside Milton Keynes
Wish I had seen more but I more than made up for it on later tours but that is another story!

Found this photo up my Mum's last week when I was scanning some photos for her. It's of the '81 MGP trip.
