I remember the security being a lot more relaxed than we were used to in the UK. We wandered into the stadium in the afternoon when they were still setting up, took a few photos and hung around for a while but nobody seemed to mind. In the evening I was searched on the way in and inevitably they found my recorder in my bag - it was a pretty big machine with a huge pair of mics, so not too easy to conceal - but they didn't seem at all bothered, just waved me through. I don't know what they were looking for, but it obviously wasn't recording gear.

It was the same on the previous tour in Cologne - although I got the recorder in without being searched that time there were several people openly videoing it, with big cameras and tripods, and right in front of the security. They'd have lasted about five minutes in the UK before being busted. Wonder what happened to that footage, it doesn't ever seem to have escaped into the trading world.

Hi there

I agree the security were so relaxed as to be almost comatose. I spent at least half of the gig hearing it in mono though thanks to someoen who whistled right down my lughole at one point! You can even hear it on the recording I have of the gig!

The '82 shows were among some of the best I ever saw the band perform and to have King Crimson on the same bill well that was something a BIT special.

That may be my recording then, I think there are only two sources in circulation, Andy Banks' and mine. As a (now retired) taper I used to hate getting in the middle of a really rowdy crowd, which would usually screw up any chances of getting a decent recording, but on this occasion - and also a few weeks later at the Marquee - I think it really adds to the atmosphere.

Hi there

If you were the guy with a big boom mic then it was definitely you. Funny old world innit! Every detail of that gig is still fresh in my mind. Mind you... 31 years ago today i was doing exactly the same thing in Birmingham! wink

That was a great tour. I saw it at the NEC Birmingham . First time I saw Genesis was the year before but this was even better. They did Suppers Ready and had loads of pink revolving lights for Afterglow which blew me away. Brilliant.

Hi there

I think most fans will agree that the 1982 tour was the last truly "classic" set from the band. I was lucky enough to see them five times on that tour and remember them all vividly - especially Hamburg, Deeside and of course, Milton Keynes!

It's time for me to be pedantic wink

This thread is about the 1982 tour when they played Supper's Ready. The year before was the Abacab tour and they didn't play SR on that tour.

Also, the pink revolving lights were at the end of SR, not Afterglow. Afterglow had the static pink lights shining out from behind the stage wink

Hi there

I vividly remember the field of white crosses made out of posters people had bought at the gig being held up during the Apocalypse section of Supper's Ready. It was almost as if everyone knew that this one was going to be played in advance - spooky or what?

Indeed I am grin

We can't be having inaccuracies you know, like getting dates wrong from only 31 years ago! wink grin

Here is a clip from the 2nd half of Supper's Ready in Toronto in 1982. It's grainy but spine-tingling. Notice the pink swirling lights just after Phil sings "New Jerusalem!!" wink
