xx The Fugitive - opinions?
« Thread started on: Dec 16th, 2012, 09:47am »

I've recently been trying music by Genesis & related I've never felt like hearing before. I've loved Tony so far, with "A Curious Feeling" and most of the first side of "The Wicked Lady" under my belt. Right now I'm listening to "And the Wheels Keep Turning" from The Fugitive. What do I have to look forward to past track 3? Also, what do you guys think of the album?

My first impression of this album wasn't very good and so it was hard for me to get into it initially. Mostly because Tony is not a professional singer and I thought his voice gave the songs more of a demo affect.

However I have to admit that Fugitive started to grow on me a lot. I would be surprised to find these tunes popping into my head at work and so forth. The songs ended up being quite a bit catchier than I originally gave them credit for. I can now say that I enjoy this album quite a lot. My favorites on the disc are Say You'll Never Leave e and the extra track Sometime Never.

Inferior to ACF but better instrumentals!

I never really got into The Fugitive. I am not that keen on Tony doing lead vocals. The album suffers the lack of a gutsy guitar more, than his other solo albums. And the songs are under average, if you measure with the high standards, Tony regularly deserves.

Personally, I loved the album from first listen and still do. Tony's vocals are sometimes a little weak (esp. on "Say You'll Never Leave Me" from the original LP, and on the extra CD tracks) but I thought his doing his own vocals gave the album a personal touch that other things of his lacked.

"And The Wheels Keep Turning" is the album's high point for me, although "By You" comes close.

And it's definitely better than ACTING VERY STRANGE... wink

I disagree, although it cannot be denied, that Mike`s voice is really poorer, than Tony`s...

Possibly my favorite solo album from Mr. Banks.

I like Say You'll Never Leave Me, Thirty Threes and At The Edge Of Night best.

Recently Moving Under popped into my mind as a result of reading about Rob Brydon's troubled teenage years in 'Small Man In A Book' - he'd imagined being in a submarine and looking through a periscope at other people going about their business without them noticing him.

I thought it was such a Banksian image!

I like The Fugitive. Has a similar vibe to Genesis albums like Duke and Abacab in a way. It's a lot more pop/rock based in comparison to the proggy sounding ACF, but it's still a great album. Past track 3, you should definitely check out Thirty Threes, which is a great instrumental track, plus there's Moving Under, K2, By You, and the instrumental track Charm. In the track By You, Tony uses the same reverse midi technique as the song Mama with the drum machine to create a sequenced sounding bit on the keyboards.

So... you consider the actual songs on AVS to be better than those on TF?
