Although I love his work, I don't think Bruford fit as well into the band

Me either! I have heard some fans say "Oh Bruford, he was class better than Collins..." shocked Err... WHAT!!??
I think on the 76' concert which was filmed, Bruford played well but from the countless bootlegs I've heard he wasn't that impressive to me.

Quote:
What puzzles me is that in an interview Chester has said that after Phil left, he proposed to Mike that he might join them to make the CAS album, but Mike firmly said ´no´.

shocked If that's true it's shocking! Chester was exactly what Genesis needed. After all the years of dedication and perfect drumming that he give them, I think he deserved it!

Yes, indeed! This is the interview: http://www.worldofgenesis.com/ChesterThompson-interview-2002.htm. Actually he doesn´t say he was pissed off, just disappointed. smiley

"If they were willing to open it up to be a real group, then I certainly would have leaped at the chance. But again, like I said, its their band; and Mike made it very clear that it was their band, and that they were not at all interested in sharing anything. So, that was that.
I was definitely disappointed about Mike’s reaction about the group."

shocked shocked shocked

I can't believe that Mike and Tony weren't interested in bringing Chester in! It beggars belief that they would bring in somebody new instead of somebody who had toured with them for decades and knew their music inside out... He even phoned them up to help them out and get involved... embarassed

I have always though CAS with Chester and Daryl would have been so much better than the band that actually toured the album.

I know Daryl was on the road with Phil at the time.

Sadly, although I enjoyed the gig at the time if you hear boots now it sounds like a very good Genesis tribute band.

With Chester and Daryl I think it would have sounded more like Genesis and the only change being Phil (albeit a big change) but Ray does have a great voice

Mat

PS .. if anyone has seen the Mechanics play the new vocalist, Tim Howar, they have would have made a brilliant replacement for Phil if he had been old enough at the time wink

They wanted a fresh start, and Tony and Mike had a unique way of writing together, and they wanted to do all the writing themselves mostly...something Chester and Daryl both would have wanted to be involved with..plus they wanted to try a newer direction, so they wanted total control.

Thanks! That makes sense. In the interview with Chester, it does sound like he would have wanted to be very closely involved, much more than Nir Zidkyahu was.

Thanks, that's a nice video! They seem to have good fun on stage. Also, a great solo by Chester towards the end!

I really don´t understand why they would bypass Chester, who was already part of the team for 20 years and doing an excellent job in playing Phil´s parts, in favor of some unknown young drummer... huh

I don't know the answer but I can only venture they wanted something different, Chester IS great, but he played live, parts laid down by another and probably got the gig both for his technique and his adaptability, maybe they wanted something else in the studio.

I remember Tony said that Chester had swing, which was a good thing, but certain songs like squonk needed to be played with no swing at all. That quote is from the Chapter and Verse book.

Chester certainly had swing. But he could play the rock stuff pretty good too. I always liked Squonk with Chester. He has a certain way of playing it. The version on Seconds Out is very heavy I think.

I agree with Tony, even if I had much less trouble listening to Chester playing Phil's parts, than Daryl playing Steve's.
