Whodunnit was one of the finest tracks since Twilight Alehouse.

If he was not an excellent guitarist Genesis would not have used him. Plus he also plays bass so Mike can get out there and play solo guitar. He is a safe pair of hands to have playing with you on stage. It's not that I don't love him he is just not Steve simples.

I think Genesis with Steve were a far better band than Genesis without Steve. Oh Genesis still made great music after Steve Left, Duke and Abacab were great Genesis albums.

Steve will always be the better guitarist, the better writer and the better performer.

Agreed. But mentioning it in the same sentence as Who Dunnit? is weird in my opinion. wink

BOTH Whodunnit and Twilight Alehouse are amazing songs in my opinion.

I love both songs a lot as one is a pi*s take on Punk and great fun, and the other is a Genesis underated classic.

Best wishes

Ok - heres another then.
He may well be a great guitarist but I also can't abide his covering of the earlier Genesis tracks and FoF in particular.

He just doesn't understand the feel. tongue
Might as well have asked Allan Holdsworth to play for them............... wink

Poor Daryl. I sometimes think the esteem that he is held in the context of Genesis rests entirely on his rendition of FoF. I have to say I do not much like his playing of it. It seems like he has to play a lot of notes to get to the next good bit, whilst when Steve plays it all the notes are good!
However, Daryl is more than just his playing of FoF. Ripples is a favourite of mine. As far as I know it was never played live when Steve was in the band. The guitar solo during the instrumental section is a thing of beauty on record and it is just as lovely live, as played by Daryl, in my opinion.

I love Daryl's playing. So different than Steve, but a great choice for the three man era. I have always thought that mike's lead guitar stuff live was week, and Daryl would have been far better to cover that guitar parts. Daryl's versión of FOF is great, and suits Phil's playing, they gave the song that fusion feel that some guys seems to hate...but I love as much as the original!

Bumped up after a long interval!

Some interesting comments here; I'd had no idea there's been so much debate of DS's take on FoF. While I don't like his rendition, I agree it's unfair to focus so much on it. He's a good player and for the work he's done on stage with them I can forgive him his occasional too-flashy moments. He added some nice little touches to many of the songs, and I agree that his playing on Ripples was brilliant. The 1980 Duke Tour version, which I had the pleasure of seeing twice, has kind of become the definitive version for me, and a lot of that is to do with his playing.

Elsewhere on the board is a discussion of a recent Uncut magazine Genesis special, which features archive news articles. In a pre-Duke (1979) interview with Collins, it's mentioned that from the next album, DS would be part of the studio band, interestingly.

He is a great guitarist. Never heard any of his solo material, though.
